I will never watch this again...

This was a powerful and staggeringly painful movie to watch.

The rape scene was AWFUL, as was Ben's descent into a horrible, wretched death.

I just don't understand the point to this film; I could see it being played to high school students to warn them against the perils of alcoholism, but other than that, it was just one big painful cramp.

Glad you liked it. Yes, it was painful to watch. That is what makes it an effective, well-made film. It was SUPPOSED to make you feel uncomfortable.

As far as the point... like all films, it is a slice-of-life look at Ben's spiral and the effect it had on Sera. I absolutely love this movie and have seen it numerous times. But, I do have to watch it only when the wife is not home and I am in the right mood.

>But, I do have to watch it only when the wife is not home

Maybe I'm missing your point or it's just a personal comment...but I'm curious what you really mean here. Why?

It's because she hates the movie "because it's so depressing." Yes, it is. But, not all movies are comedies... yet, that is pretty much all she wants to watch. That's fine for her, and I have no problem with it except you miss out on some incredible art. I guess I'm drawn to movies that are more serious, angst-driven, even dark. She hates them, so I have to watch them only when she's gone... ESPECIALLY this one.

reply

Can you recommend other movies like that, like your favorites. I know of this movie, Bully, and Elephant as movies that are really, really dark and angst driven.

The point of art is show, explore, expose human and social conditions (among other possible usages). Not all movies and forms of art are mean to delight, to entertain. Some pieces are intended to go on specific scenarios and ideas, like pain, melancholy, confusion, and so on. Examples of these, outside cinema, are some of the most well known of Mahler's scores, Astor Piazzolla's "Oblivion", and the "The remains of the day" novel.

The point of this specific film is to show an interesting, deep, yet heart wrenching story about how the life of a highly self destructive alcoholic and an emotional weak prostitute interact with each other, and, at some point, complement their situations.

I suggest you read what the description of the movies before watching them, if you don't like to explore the dark sides of the soul, and avoid, also, masterpieces like "Wild strawberries", "8 1/2", and even "Citizen Kane".

reply

No, my dear, I am not a child and do not need to read descriptions of movies before I watch them.

Geesh; one cannot express an opinion of dislike about any movie here on IMDB without being personally insulted. I'm an educated person and enjoy all sort of films, including those that "explore the dark side of the soul."

I simply did not like this movie; I expressed why, and I could easily go into more detail, but this is not a very friendly thread, so I'll simply say goodbye.

I suggest IRREVERSIBLE, I think that movie would be a better fit for you.

I would hazard that the point of the movie was not so much alcoholism as it was to depict loneliness and humanity and its inherent craving for true meaning, human contact and togetherness in an absurd, postmodern world. I think that behind the apparent harshness and gloom of the reality described in this movie, there is also true beauty, love and happiness to be found in there, the happiness of 2 injured lost souls who found love and meaning in each other despite the odds.

I found the movie to be an interesting character study and a compelling take on human nature. But to each his own obviously.

Requiem for a Dream is another similar yet completely different movie which also addresses some of the same themes with rawness and grit. Loved it too, even more than this one.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs
