What was the point?

I just sat through this and fail to see the point of it all.

Cage's character did not overcome his addiction to alcohol, and had a fleeting friendship with a whore.

That's it.

There was no character development; it left me feeling nothing but sorrow for people who live these types of lives.

That was the point. To show descent into alcoholism realistically without the typical redeeming happy ending.

Sad, but reality is that it doesn't turn out good for most alcoholics out there.

I felt the same way when I saw this. Waste of time. I don't need a happy hollywood ending most of the time, but seems like this movie didn't need to be made.

No character development? I don't know what movie you were watching... but it wasn't this one.

Well its a love story, isnt it. Not your usual love story, but a love story nonetheless.

"The definition of character development refers to the process of creating a believable character in fiction by giving the character depth and personality."

Both Ben and Sera were believable characters with depth and personality. I think you may be thinking of a character arc, which is when a character changes over the course of the story. Characters don't necessarily have to change.

Well said.

I agree with OP. Just saw this film for the first time.

I'm sure others enjoyed it (and I have no problem with that), but I really don't care for the lives of scum unless they help someone else or overcome their self-destructiveness. It was interesting at best, but a film I won't bother to watch again.
