I've been led to understand that this is based on some more or less real historical event... Would anyone happen to know when that was?

It's not real, it's based on a novel. Total fiction. The historical facts, like the plague and stuff, are real, but that's all. It's supposed to be in the 13th-14th century I think.

ist based on a novel by a norwegian writer Sigrid Undset. By the way she received the Literature Nobel price for this book. The book ist much more better!
