Should I really watch this?

I see that this film has been getting some good reviews on here. Just the cover doesn't look like my kind of thing. But apparently it's one of the 101 films you must own before you die, along with 'Bladerunner', so...???

I like cerebral, intelligent films and good animation, as opposed to ones with which you can just sit back and watch people continuously bashing each other up and posing nude for no apparent reason, and then forget the next day (although don't get me wrong, I like some amount of action/violence in a film, if it isn't the only aspect of it). I've just heard that there are many anime films that fall into the latter category, and this is putting me off.

For the record, my favourite films are 'Princess Mononoke' and 'A Clockwork Orange'. I also loved 'The Matrix', but for the philosophical element not just the action scenes.

I'd like to know your opinions. Do you think I will enjoy 'Ghost in the Shell'?

You remember that HUMUNGOUS fish I caught?

Of course, it's not just a great anime, it's a great movie in general. Since you're not adverse to animation on it's own and enjoy philosophical elements I'm willing to bet you'll enjoy in immensely.
Ghost in the shell is both thoughtful and serious.
Do watch it.

Thanks a lot for the advice, it sounds like a great film from your description!

I'm sure that you'll like "Ghost in the Shell." It's one of my favorite films, and in case you didn't know, Ghost in the Shell inspired many scenes in the Matrix, not necessarily the philosophical elements, just some of the camera shots. Ghost in the Shell does have nudity and violence, but out of necessity. The film takes place in the 2020's, and there are lots of cool little technologies, like Therm-Optic Camoflauge, and the ability to hack into someone's brain (many people are cyborg's with "cyber-brains" in the film).

I'm rambling, I apologize. The film is very intelligent, has great animation, the action-scenes are fast-paced, beautifully animated, and well-done. Ghost in the Shell asks some questions that I've never seen in other films, to be honest. The musical score is also very good, and is capable of sending chills down your spine, in parts (namely the opening credits). I would reccommend this movie to anyone smart, and you seem to be very smart, so I would watch this as soon as possible.

You snoze, you loze.

Without this film, The Matrix wouldn't exist, so do watch.

reply

This is the only anime movie I've seen and its very good.

reply

It's definitely worth watching.

Nevermore

Thanks guys!

I bought the film and watched it yesterday, and I absolutely loved it! It's so *beep* unfair that it's not in the top 250.

So we cancel the ticker-tape parade?

Defintely, it's a masterpiece of Sci-fi and also watch Akira.

yes, and the matrix did rip scenes from this movie also its much more philosophical

reply

I did watch Akira, only I preferred this one because I felt it was deeper and more aesthetically beautiful.

Ghost in the Shell shines above The Matrix in everything - themes, depth, aesthetics, originality...

Pretty please, with a cherry on top, clean the *beep* car.

Eggsaladly, I personally like akira better than this but they are both in my top 20.
