The Matrix Pure ripped this off!

It sickens me to think that the Matrix creators ripped off alot of sequences out of this film. Who thinks so?

reply

It's not a rip-off. It's just combination of alot of animes. And no, it doesn't piss me off. I love "The Matrix." Sure, it's not as great as "Ghost in the Shell." But it is one of the greatest animes, NEVER made.

The best of that bunch, would be "Blade Runner." That's the one sci-fi film, that could of been an anime. But luckily, it was made as a live-action film.

Last Film seen:
Blue Velvet- 9/10

Why don't you try watching some movies that aren't anime, and you can see the ones Ghost in the Shell "ripped off." Also, read some books. The Matrix takes from many sources, many more than Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the shell just takes from some cyberpunk novels and some old TV shows.
I like both movies, but to claim that the Matrix ripped off Ghost in the Shell shows that you haven't seen much in the way of film.

reply

The Matrix stole more from Neuromancer than it did from Ghost in the Shell.

Yup. And that's one of the places Ghost in the Shell came from, too.

The Matrix stole more from Grant Morrison's The Invisibles more than anything else.

... and of course lem's futurological congress...

nice backtracking boys! yep, gits is definitely influenced by neuromancer, johnny mnemonic and other gibson stuff, as is matrix. one could go on and track some influence by samuel r. delany or william burroughs. still, even wachovskis admit copying from gits. the watermellon-shooting sequence is a direct homage, the 'birth' sequence is a direct homage, the stupid neck connectors are a direct homage. and there's more. you know, none of those sci-fi classics has martial arts in it. neuromancer has what? hideo throwing stuff after being blinded by riviera. gits has what? motoko doing crazy *beep* all the time. matrix is like live-action anime, animatrix just proves the point. no one denies influence of other things, but gits is clearly being ripped off directly.

Don't forget Batou's glass eyes being a direct take-off of Molly Million's eyes in Neuromancer.

The mAtrix stole ur little sisters virginity!! after it wrinkled ur school clothes an drank ur chocolate milk!

reply

And neuromancerr steals from Naked Lunch. But this is not the point, because although we never end this conversation. I think that the destiny of all great art is to be copied or steal, in other words, Ridley Scott, The Wachowski Brothers, William Gibson, W.S. Boroughs, Mamoruo Oshii, Etc, all copy progressively each other, and put their own personal seal in the process, and craft some of the best master works in the last 20 years, but the reality beneath this argue is that Cyber punk is the best genera of all.

reply

if you meantion neuromancer, don't forget good old Philip K. Dick. he did it all looong before we ever saw Tron.

It is true, and the Wachowski brothers have said this several times in public, that they were very inspired by Ghost in the Shell and another anime while they made The Matrix. So much that many of the scenes in The Matrix are taken directly from Ghost in the Shell.
Take the green Matrix code (rotated Japanese kana letters) as an example, or how about the whole concept of a "digital self" in a vast network, which as far as I know originates from Neuromancer.

However, just as The Matrix gathered inspiration from other sources, Ghost in the Shell was also inspired by other cyberpunk novels and sci-fi movies, Neuromancer and Blade Runner to name a few.
There's no reason to start a flaming war because of that, almost all works of art are inspired by other.

An interesting scene by scene comparison of The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell.

I can see a how there would be a lot of things that the matrix ripped off, but the guy who started the thread is talking about scenes that were swiped. The lobby shootout anyone? =)

ok so some melons exploded in a fight sequence as in the Matrix, but... dont get your knickers in a twist, they are both great.

reply

THere are similarities yeah, but they are totally different films, the matrix borrowed a lot of ideas and made some of their own to bring action and philosphy to the mainstream, matrix didn't rip this off at all, there aren't cyborgs running around solving crimes. They're all stunning films.

reply

u wanna see alot of the actual fightin, look at old jet li movies, youll find the fights move for move

reply

No man your soooo wrong, Matrix copied from The Lion King... stupid!

Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.

reply

It is true that the Matrix was inspired by Ghost in the Shell but I would not call it a rip off. The creators of the Matrix worked with the Ghost in the Shell creators. Not only that, the Ghost in the Shell team created the Animatrix series later on.

GITS, The Matrix, Blade Runner, and every cyberpunk manga and novel ever written all ripped off Shakespeare.

reply

The Matrix is a ripoff of Plato (Allegory of the Cave)

What do I win?

:D

reply

[deleted]

It's not really ripped off. You can see a lot of similarities, but then Ghost in the Shell has a lot of similarities between other films etc.

The Matrix is a piece of *beep* anyway, it's not even in the same league as Ghost in the Shell.

Plato Allegory of the Cave
W.S. Boroughs Naked Lunch

Grant Morrison's The Invisibles
Oshiis Ghost in the Shell
Wachowski Brothers Matrix

And no, the Wachowski's didnt ripped it if. In this case i would call it an hommage.

Also Doctor Who: The Deadly Assassin:

but in saying that The Matrix(first movie) was excellent in style and in plot which is what the sequels didn't have. The Matrix secret is one of the biggest ah-ha moments in film history. It is also a parable about the meaninglessness of modern society. The same is also true about Fight Club.
