Animal cruelty?

Does anyone know how much of the animal cruelty in the film was real vs. staged? Walrus scene? Rabbits? Dogs? I'm pretty sure those rabbits and dogs really got shot, unless this film had a higher production budget than it looked like...

Been googling and I can't find any info about it. Was wondering if it had the disclaimer ("No animals were harmed...") in the ending credits -- since they're in Norwegian I couldn't tell.

reply

No such disclaimer in norwegian. I dont think they shoot the dogs, as that would be illegal. The rabbits perhaps; as they are food anyway.

I'll be honest, I haven't seen the film. But I've seen some very realistic animal killing scenes that turned out to be brilliantly staged. Europeans tend to be even more liberal minded (at this point of history) than Americans. I doubt very much the animals were harmed.

reply

So funny that you use the word liberal, in the sense that europeans would NOT allow something to take place :) But yes, I doubt they killed any animals at all in this movie.

reply

Yeah, I meant liberal in terms of accepting other forms of life as having right to their existence. But I think you got my drift. :)

The rabbits were definitely shot. You can see the blood spray out as the bullet passes through them. The puppy appeared to just get shot with a paint pellet and then the next shot was off camera. I don't know about the walrus.

The rabbits were definately stock footage of shot animals. The walrus were probably not shot, but they probably got a dead one there for the slaughter scene.

I think it was kind of obvious, that the shooting of the dog was bad effects. Shooting the rabbits was probably true, but can't really be considered animal cruelty as this was standard hunting. The walrus scene...again, nothing that happened in the film. It was shot under different circumstances. If you look closely, you'll see that the actors and the walrus are never in the same picture. I think it was filmed seperately under controlled hunting circumstances, but the shooting itself was probably real enough. So, it's footage from a real hunting situation used in a fictional film.
