Well, supposedly Baumbach made it when he was 24 years old, so that would make it 1993, the year he turned 24. Production possibly bled over into 1994, because he wouldn't have turned 25 until September of that year.
shareMy question was rather premature as I typed it during the initial scenes when they were referring to the Czech Republic as former Czechoslovakia. It was only later when Grover's dad corrected Grover that I realized this was more a reference to how anything other than college life turns into background noise during those years.
