Did Van Pelt know he was part of a board game?

Or was he trapped inside of it like Alan was? He didn't seem very surprised when the gun store clerk told him the bullets for his gun were discontinued but he knew about the board game being what Alan and the rest were going after.

I have an idea for a prequel where Van Pelt is in the company of all these other great hunters are looking for a new sport. Challenging prey worthy of the hunt. Then one of them reveals a board game to the initial scepticism of the others. At least until he explains he got the game from some mystical voodoo ooga booga guy (um, what's the politically correct way of saying that? Lol), and the game has supernatural wonders beyond imagination. With a roll of the dice this proves to be true, and the hunters begin to play.

Only unlike the characters we know from Jumanji, these characters are far better prepared for it. So the game offers Van Pelt a proposition, if he kills the other players he'll be granted immortality within the jungles of Jumanji, becoming part of the game, and forever able to hunt as he pleases. Van Pelt accepts, and so it goes.

Later when Alan Parish is transported into the jungles of Jumanji, Van Pelt becomes Alan's sociopathic mentor. Teaching him the skills he'll need to survive in the jungles of Jumanji, but at the same time always managing to be a real dickhead about it.

Once Alan has successfully completed his training, Van Pelt tries to shoot him. Alan runs away and spends the rest of his time in Jumanji fending for himself.

I reckon that he knew he was part of the game and that he could only try to kill Alan once the game he started was finished.

He definitely knew he was part of a board game. Remember when he said to Sarah and Judy that he's after Alan because he was the one who "Rolled the dice?"

Well, I don't think that's why he was after Alan. Because remember, he was after Alan while he was still in the game. So it didn't matter who rolled the dice.

I love you, Kristen Stewart. :) You are so beautiful and talented. I would love to perform with you.

I don't think he knew he was part of the game. I think he, himself, was part of the game. If you rolled his number, he would take part of whoever, or whatever, you felt was trying to bring you down. With Alan rolling his number, his thoughts were what made that happen.

I think that Van Pelt did know he was part of a board game. The guy had many chances to kill Sarah and the others yet he was explicitly only out to kill Alan. I don't know about you, but that just screams "following the rules of the game" to me.

Yes, Kristen, he was after Alan in the jungle, but Alan got into the jungle by rolling the dice in the first place.

There seems to be something else "controlling" the game. He tells Sarah, "Calm down I could've killed you anytime I wanted but you didn't roll the dice. Alan did." This sounds like he wants to kill Sarah but he can't because the "ruler of the game" would punish him for it or something. Why else would Van Pelt not just kill Sarah if it was all his choice?

That is something scary to think about. The ruler of the game must be a really sadistic person. Sucking little boys into a scary jungle full of scary animals and a man who enjoys killing people. Wish the Punisher could kill this evil ruler of the game and Van Pelt. That'd actually make a cool story. Imagine an alternate universe where Frank and his kids find Jumanji and start playing it. Then one of his kids gets sucked into the game. Except with his military training Van Pelt probably wouldn't stand a chance against him. He'd sneak up on him and break his neck.
