The beginning of the film was just awful and unnecessarily!

The 1969 scene with the bullies was completely unnecessarily and they should've cut it from the film and just had Alan playing the game and ending up 26 years in the future. We didn't need to see him get beat up like that and they do absolutely nothing to resolve the bullying problem, so why even include that in the film? Filmmakers were so stupid back then, I guess. Thank God bullies are a rare breed in today's films! Other than that, the rest of the film is great and I hope if they ever remake this film, the bullies are cut from it.

This is what Doug Walker was talking about when he said that bullying is the worst cliche you'd probably ever see in films and TV shows. They are completely pointless, not funny, there's no backstory, and they contribute nothing to plot unless it's a movie like Back To The Future or The Karate Kid where they actually have a point to the film's overall plot like Marty telling his dad to stand up for himself or Danial Russo learning karate to fight back against a gang of viscous martial arts thugs that torment him everyday at school.

This film, however had no reason to add these bastards into the plot as they have nothing to do with a film about a board game coming to life with wild animals and Alan never stands up to these bullies in the film, unlike The Karate Kid. So it was all just a waste of time, money, and scriptwork to include these pricks in an otherwise great film! Oh well, at least filmmakers are listening to Doug about bullying being a huge problem films and shows!

Dude, you just don't like bullies because you were bullied and you're taking out your frustrations out in cartoons and movies. Don't argue that it's anything else.

I would have to say you are wrong. If I remember correctly if not for the bullies he would have never found the game.

The game was in the forest, but the bullies were NOT necessarily, they could've used something else.

I have to disagree, think about the the inscription "a game for those who seek to find, a way to leave their world behind" (or something to that effect), this ties us in to Alan's feelings when he opens in the film, he's being bullied which leads to his fight with his father and subsequently the desire to run away.
You could of course still have him finding the game, but the bullies increase the conflict between target and son.
It isn't just tacked on without reason in this instance.

Actually, the bullies were necessary because his father told him that he would need to learn to stand up to bullies and face what he was afraid of. Toward the end just before he wins the game, VanPelt (who bullied him when he was in the jungle) makes his final appearance and corners him. He tells Alan that it was over for him and he should start running to which Alan stands up to him and tells him he wasn't going to run because he remembered what his father said. Just as VanPelt is about to kill him, the dice finally stopped rolling and it gave him just enough moves to win and rid him of VanPelt.

Yeah.

I would have to say I disagree with you I think it explained a lot I mean you see the whole relationship that happens between the father and son even why he decided to run away, and where the boar game came from. And even how Alan got into the board game to begin with and maybe even why the numbers 5 or 8 were special, and even to know who is is. If they had the same thinking I am sure a lot of audiences seeing the movie for the first time would have no idea who Robin Williams' character is, and where he came from. Maybe in more recent family movies, there hasn't been as many bullies but looking back at the last 10 years did you miss out on the Disney movie Bridge to Terabithia? And I know that it has been way more then 10 years since it came out Max Keeble's Big Move which had bullies as well. But is it ever a good idea to have a child stand up or even try to stand up to a bully, rather then telling an adult they trust more like say one or both their parents, a teacher etc.

I disagree and I was tormented by my classmates and some of my teachers.
