Nastiest close-combat weapon in a movie...

...ever. Light/plasma/whatever-string?? Just be careful... come on!! Why do japanese guys in movies always have to be so evil?

reply

Yeah that weapon is sick! Does it have an official name?

reply

That was the same weapon that killed that Black drag queen LOL!

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

reply

It would be a 'mono-filament whip' if you care for a descriptor. Naturally, an official name would be a brand-name if such a thing really did exist.

Like the other poster said, it's a mono-filament and it basically is a whip made of atoms...that's why it's so 'sharp' as it's 'edge' is only an atom across. I've also heard it being called a nano-molecular filament garrote.

They're so evil cuz the white men says so!!!

That aside, it's called a monomolecular wire - common in the world of science fiction. Nasty weapon indeed, albeit pretty cool.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Was this weapon invented by William Gibson (the authour of the story)? Is that where you got the name from?

reply

I read an article on the short story+movie and - voila - the name of the weapon was mentioned. And no, Gibson didn't invent it.

I remember it having been intruduced in pop culture in Cyber City Oedo 808. Maybe it had been used before.

reply

Also used in the Pen&Paper RPG Shadowrun which is heavily inspired by Gibson.
