Ususable English Subtitles

The DVD I got has hard-subs for Chinese and English, but the English translation gets so off the rails that it is nonsense, and I could not follow the movie.

It was also letterboxed and then encoded as 4:3, so on a modern TV it has a window box all the way around. The actual video is 712x302 pixels. So it's a wonder to be able to read the subs at all, as they were designed (it seems) for a movie theater screen.
