Antoinette and Ben Franklin?
I haven't been able to find a copy of this film yet. Can't wait tell I do. I am particularly interested in it because of it's portrayals of Jefferson's interaction with the French Court of Marie Antoinette, and of course the colorful and lovely female portraitist, Maria Cosway.
I know that Jefferson regarded the Queen as a sparkling, but foolish woman who indulged her thirst for excess at the expense of her country's well-fare, and destroyed the monarchy's chance for survival by pridefully clinging to the old regime. Perhaps most unforgivably in his eyes, she meddled in her husband's affairs (Jefferson does not appear to have thought much of women in politics).
I am finding considerably more difficulty finding information on Ben Franklin's take on Marie Antoinette. I had thought his famous career in Paris, and Legendary interactions with female aristocrats there would lend a wealth of material on this topic. Alas, I can find nothing of his dealings with, and opinion of the Queen. Does anybody have knowledge of this topic, or sources I may consult?
