Unrated Version

Where do you find the unrated version? And what's the difference?

reply

I'm also looking för the "Director's Cut" version of the film.

Anyone know where I can buy it?

reply

Second-hand VHS copies are available on amazon.com: just do a VHS search for 'Jade Friedkin' and both the standard and unrated versions will come up.
As far as I know, the unrated version has not been released on DVD.
I have only seen the standard version, so I don't know exactly what the difference is. From what I've read, I gather the unrated version has more nudity (as you'd expect!) and a different ending.

There are quite a few differences. My parents bought me the directors cut for xmas (they didn't know what the movie was about, just that i'd asked for it) back in the day. There is a scene near the beginning where David meets up with Trina in a park to talk about Kyle's murder. The sex scene at the end is longer and shows testicles. The footage on the found sex tape is longer. And, in the end of the director's cut, after Matt confesses to his wife and says that he wants to be "introduced" to Jade the next time they make love a scene is added that shows David has been listening to and recording their conversation. The director's cut ends with David turning off his recorder, getting out of his car, and walking toward their mansion. Some of the extra scenes slow down the movie even more, but also explain a lot.

I watched the unrated director's cut version last night. I had seen the standard UK version, which had (I think) most of the sex and nudity in it already.

I was looking forward to seeing the director's cut because I remember reading an interview with William Friedkin and he was saying that his original version played at the Venice Film Festival and got great reviews. But then it was cut for cinema release and this harmed the movie. The way he made it sound, it was an entirely different film.

Well, sorry, Billy, but those 12 minutes of extra footage were completely inconsequential to the movie. They were as dull as most of the extras you get on DVD, and the movie just didn't need them.

Yeah you can buy the unrated director's cut online at Amazon.com for $9.99 and watch on your computer, just type in Jade director's cut. The director's cut is 12mints longer and has a different ending. Personally i like the director's cut far more than the theatrical version, the car chase was longer which i loved, and the extra scenes added more character development for each of the characters in the movie. The ending was also different and i liked it a lot better than version one. However a dvd release with a director's commentary would be awesome for me though with some extra features. That's just me you don't have to take my word for it, I'm just a big fan of Hurricane Billy.

I agree completely, pacificcanoe.

I don't know how anybody can say there's no difference in the quality of the Director's Cut of the movie?

I couldn't believe how bad the Theatrical Cut was when I saw it. Luckily, I'd seen the Director's Cut on Pay-Per-View. Then they used to air it often on CINEMAX.

The Director's Cut is far superior.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILAGE!!!

Caruso is going to arrest Palminteri at the end. That's why he is recording him and gets out of the car and starts walking up to the house. If I remember correctly, he has an arrest warrant on the dashboard of his car while he's recording his best friend's confession.

It's his best friend and now he has to arrest him for murder. Caruso knew it was Palminteri from the beginning because of the cufflink he left at the crime scene. He told the woman he works with (assistant DA) to hold off for now on the cufflink.

In the Theatrical Version, Palminteri seems to get away with the murder. That alone shows that the differences between the two versions are huge!

It just annoys me that the DC has never been released on DVD. They release so much crap along with re-releasing the same movies six or seven times.

This doesn't deserve to have both versions out there? Limit the number to 30 to 50 thousand units and I guarantee they'll sell out.

^Yes I remember cinemax playing the director's cut. However, hbo played the theatrical version tonight and I felt like I was sorta watching a different movie.

reply

I prefer the theatrical ending more cause i think its more sinister that he got away with it...and i just love the choppy jittery editing at the very end showing a quick clip of Jade... I think its a very underrated movie and i don't know why the critic's savaged the movie when it came out.

reply

Yeah, I agree. I preferred the theatrical ending. It suited the mood of the movie more that he got away with it.

reply

Interesting - WGN just ran it late-night and the sex scenes were missing the stuff you describe here, but the ending was as in the director's cut.

I check periodically for the DVD release of the UR-DC. No luck so far. As far as I can tell (and I've really been paying attention) the only place you will see this cut IS on Cinemax. They seem to have some kind of exclusivity with it (which they do not share with their big brother HBO). This is one of my favorite movies and I don't understand all the negative opinions. The casting is excellent. In fact, up until I saw this movie (on MAX) I was no fan of David Caruso, to say the very least. Needless to say my opinion has changed! Linda Fiorentino was perfect as the title character and the by-play between investigators Karen and Petey (played by so well by Donna Murphy and Ken King) was priceless. And who could play the part of the philandering Governor better than Richard Crenna! Michael Biehn was a perfect nut-case. He learned how to "loose it" in his role in The Abyss about five years earlier. Chazz Palminteri's portrayal of the oily and sadistic defense attorney was right on target. Sorry to the naysayers, but if you hate this movie, you weren't paying attention.

Hi Adam,

I only saw the Director's cut once, but I think it is good. Better than the theatrical version? I'd have to see it again to make that call, however, any way you slice it, Jade is unfairly maligned. I agree: The casting is excellent and the players all delivered. Plus, the movie is directed with flair and style. Love the cinematography and Asian themes. I like to think of THIS as a sister movie to Basic Instinct in lieu of Basic Instinct 2. It's dark, it's edgy, and it is about adults misbehaving. Is it Shakespeare on screen, or should it have swept the Oscars? No, but it's entertaining. I'll have to keep an eye out for the DC on Cinemax. It runs 107 mins. as opposed to 95 mins, right?

You can get the unrated director's cut in widescreen from Amazon Video-On-Demand or iTunes as a purchase only ($9.99). I'm fighting the decision. I'd still prefer to have it on DVD instead of having to hook my iPod up to my TV to properly watch it. Plus, the compression quality for an iTunes download is inferior to that of a DVD. If it were just a rental, I'd be on it already, but $10 for an iTunes movie download feels steep for the quality. Plus, I surely haven't seen the film since the late 90s when all video rental stores still carried VHS tapes. So, it's a tough purchase decision to make for me. At least, with a DVD, I can re-sell it if I don't like the film. With a digital download, I'm stuck with it whether I end up still enjoying the movie or not.

Basically, I went out seeking the film to help with inspiration on a new screenplay I'm writing. Just need to tap into that 90s erotic thriller vibe to help ease this short film script along.

Anyway, I hope this helps you all seeking the elusive director's cut.

It's not the director's cut on either Amazon or iTunes. I rented it last night because I thought it was and it's just the theatrical cut. The only difference is the color correcting in the scene near the end as we see Trina as Jade in the hotel room.

reply

Well, the version I bought at the time from iTunes is the director's cut with Caruso doing the surveillence on the Gavin house at the end in addition to the more explicit sex scenes. iTunes still lists the director's cut as available for rental or purchase. However, Amazon VOD only lists the theatrical cut as available for rental. The director's cut is only available for purchase from them.

reply

I'll probably purchase the Amazon download and burn a copy to DVD.

That's better than the ridiculous prices for used VHS copies of the Director's Cut.

just curious if there are any versions that omit the ever obnoxious micheal biehn...i have yet to see him in any movie when he isn't sneering all the time...at one time i thought david was going to cash him in like doc holiday and ringo but alas not...
