Why such a high rating

This film is terrible. I'd love to hear why people have rated it as high as it is. If it didn't have a such a commendable cast I'd never know it existed.

i htink its lovely, such an original storyline, has the ability to make you laugh and cry, i am disappointed with the ending tho, think he could have found somebidy much more suitable
Nobodys perfect but im so close it scares me

reply

Yes, the ending was particualrly bad. I thought I must have missed something, but no, It really did jump that far ahead. It is nice and fairly original, but i'm afraid it hangs around with Love Actually at the bottom of the "soppy rubbish" film spectrum.

reply

Oh no! This film was marvellous! I watched it for the second time the other night and my sister was roaring down the stairs angrily because my laughter was keeping her awake! It's funny and it's sweet and I love it.

at the end it did seem that they were like in a hurry, suddenly married and then the end..
but average rating for an average movie, Samantha is my favourite

e: see, I was in a hurry myself,
totally misread the thing

I don't know if Jack and Amy were married in the final scene, but the wedding was for William and Sarah's mom.

I like it because it is sweet. It's a nice story. I agree that the ending seemed a bit rushed, but it wasn't horrible.

reply

If you watch the ending properly, you'll notice that it's William and Sarah's mum who get married NOT Jack and Amy!!!

I think the ending was perfect. It took Amy to leave for Jack to realise his feelings for her (this seems to be common with men my family, friends and I know, and yes, some women too!! - they don't know a good thing until it's gone!)

Come on, it's a nice romantic ending , which is what you all wanted - admit it!!

reply

It's a wonderful film, and rather like the little twist that it's Bill and Sarah's Mum who get married at the end. Ok, there are some slightly soppy moments. Surely that's the point.

Talk of the devil, its on E4 now!
The only bit i dont get is how sarah (mommy sarah not baby sarah) dies. it doesnt seem to be explained, have i missed tht bit or have the tv people cut tht bit out? i cud imagine tht bit wud be pretty vital!!
seems a bit disjointed at places, as above and when sarahs mom is putting flowers on her grave and she finds tht bottle, i dont no wether its jst me but some things jst dont make sense!
But generally i love the film, the kid is ADORABLE and its a good film to have a really good cry 2!

reply

The small bottle on the grave, with flowers in, was obviously put there by Bill during his "down and out" phase. He was/is an alcoholic, remember? He knew of the couple before he and Jack became friends.

I think it's a great film, albeit a bit rushed, the time span it covers is quite long, and to fit it into the amount of film is perhaps a bit hard. But there's some great acting from some leading lights in UK cinema, as well as some excellently written lines and twists.
Recommend 100%

reply

I'm pretty sure the bottle on the grave was left by Jack and not Bill. Jack, in his grief, was drinking a LOT. It makes sense to me that he'd go to his wife's grave while drunk.

No, they didn't mention it at all. I started a post about adult Sarah dying a while back that's still on the board. Obviously, we know she died giving birth or just after but I often think they could have put just a quick line in to reference exactly what it was - someone on the thread I mentioned suggested blood loss, but it does leave you wondering.

Maybe Sarah's mum or Jack's mum could have mentioned it - in fact, I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned directly (I don't remember anyone referencing it) when Jack met Amy, to explain why he was a single father, perhaps.

It's a great movie, but there's is definitaly lack in romance between Amy and Jack... This movie could be even better if they worked that out better
