My personal favorite and by far the best gay movie is Gus Van Zant's
"My Own Private Idaho". If you want to see how gay hustlers survive,
this accurate portrail is augmented by superb performance's by River
Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, James Russo, Udo Kier and William Richert.

The pace, style and grit of MOPI is defly handled by Van Zant. I lived
in Portland at the time the movie is set and the gay hustler subculture
seen here is exactly as I lived it.

The campfire scene is the best, with just River and Keanu. Van Zant's
screen play leaves no doubt for me, he must have lived it to write it.
Simply his best movie then or now.

The conclusion leaves you hanging and is open to many interpretations.

It is rumored that Keanu rode his motorcycle from Canada to Florida in
order to talk River into playing opposite him. This is the last risky
role Keanu played.

The film is challenging to understand and may require a 2nd or 3rd
viewing. I have watched it 9 times and find something new each time
thru.

The music and cinematography won awards, as did River and Van Zant
This is what an independent film is all about

I love "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss" with Sean Hayes; it is real, poignant, moving and has a genuine surprise twist at the end - bittersweet and memorable. I know most people would pick "Brokeback Mountain" but I have real problems with that flick as a "gay movie" per se. Like Hollywood wanted to make a gay romance, but the only way to do it was to make both men bisexual and show them married and able to father children too. It was a cheap and easy way to manipulate audiences into accepting a gay movie, forget the all too convenient excuse of 1963 Wyoming. Plus the film had so many plot holes, you could drive a Mack Truck through it. The dramatic structure was weak and often made no sense at all. Still it was an incredibly well acted and directed film with beautiful photography and music, hard not to like.

But still and all, I prefer the quiet gem of "Billy". Highly recommended.
