Widescreen version on DVD?

Does a widescreen version of this movie exist on DVD? The dvd details on this page list it as pan and scan. If you go to amazon.com or deepdiscountdvd.com, they don't even list the aspect ratio. Where can I purchase a widescreen version? Any news of a release date for a widescreen version?

reply

The Kino Video DVD of it I'm watching has a black bar on the bottom but no discernable one on top. Feels widescreen.

Your TV's cutting off the top with over-scan. Mine has bars on top and bottom. It's probably around 1.66:1 aspect ratio, or less.

maturity, Where did you buy your copy from?

reply

The BFI is currently preparing a new DVD and Blu-ray edition, for release in early 2010.

You can rest assured that the aspect ratio will be correct, as the transfer was supervised and approved by the Quay Brothers and cinematographer Nic Knowland - and the DVD will be anamorphically enhanced (unlike the old OOP Kino release). There will also be plenty of extras.

That's great mbrooke.
thanks!

The BFI issue is imminent http://homecinema.thedigitalfix.co.uk/content.php?contentid=72364 and the original aspect ratio of the film is 1.66:1, so a widescreen version isn't going to happen.

reply

1.66:1 IS widescreen - or rather, it's the standard European widescreen aspect ratio. Which means there'll be thin black bars on either side of the image on a normal widescreen television, but this is absolutely correct.

It's probably also worth mentioning that the new BFI release is region-free and contains Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film. The Blu-ray should play on any setup worldwide.
