Documentaries about this?

Have there been made any documentaries about this, like with the actual persons involved, preferably on sale somewhere. Any info greatly appreciated.

It would be interesting, but I doubt it. The McMartins probably don't want to talk about it, and the identities of the kids were not known. The McMartin's lawyer died shortly after the trials ended, 2 of the defendants have since died, and I am certain the prosecutor, investigators, councilers, and even the media that threw fuel on the fire would not want to talk about one of the biggest blunders in history of the world and how they were responsible for it. You can do a documentary on it, but the only original witnesses would be Ray Buckey, some children that step forward (I have the feeling that many of them are still carrying around a lot of pain from this), or if some parents of the children step forward. I think most of the people involved in this just want to lay it to rest.

A lot has been written about it by lawyers and law schools. In fact, I think the movie did not do any justice as far as showing just the vast number of holes there were in the allegations (it was almost comical at how the police tried to prove that the tunnels were real). Then again, if all of that information was included, this already long and complicated story would have lasted another 2 hours.

An archeologist conducted a dig on the McMartin site and claimed in a report that tunnels were found. The report was critiqued by supporters of the former defendants, who claimed that the archeology team mistook a rubbish tip for tunnels, which the archeologist denied. The conclusion of his report was

If the stories of the children were bogus fantasies, there is no excuse for the tunnels discovered under the school. If there really were tunnels, there is no excuse for the glib dismissal of any and all of the complaints of the children and their parents.

I have no idea what occurred at McMartin. I don't believe some of the allegations but don't think that all were baseless either. Buckey's trials resulted in a mistrial and hung jury and seven jurors said they felt that abuse had indeed occurred but that the prosecution couldn't prove BARD that the Buckeys did it, or who precisely abused whom.

But it wasn't as clear cut as is being made out, imo.

Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!

There was a documentary on TV -- two hours, I think, on PBS -- about a very similar case in Eden, North Carolina, that happened at about the same time as the McMartin case. A wave of accusations against preschools covered the country.

I don't know if the doc is available commercially or not. And I forget the name of it. The director, a European woman, is fairly well known but I can't remember it. One of her names begins with an "O". Opel or something. Drat. Now I won't be able to sleep.

Found something. The director's name was Ofra Bikel and the town was not Eden but Edenton, North Carolina. Bikel produced two or three documentary episodes for Frontline and they may be available through PBS.

From The Wall Street Journal
By Barbara D. Phillips

"In 1991, "Frontline" producer Ofra Bikel profiled Edenton, N.C., a small town torn by allegations of child abuse at the Little Rascals day-care center; seven people were eventually indicted. In 1993 she raised compelling questions about the evidence and the fairness of the trials, which had resulted in 12 life sentences for owner Bob Kelly and one life sentence for day-care worker Dawn Wilson. This latest installment brings all the cases up-to-date. Most harrowing of all is the decision faced by Betsy Kelly, Bob's wife-after years of protesting her obvious innocence should she go to trial and risk meeting her husband's fate, or cop a plea and be quickly reunited with her daughter? The dilemma, and the ramifications of her choice and those faced by the others, are painful to watch
