THE ULTIMATE QUESTION!

Did the magic lie in the key or the cupboard?

reply

In the books it was the key.

reply

oh ok sweet. i haven't read that book since i was a child.

reply

Well the movies seemed to suggest the magic was in the cupboard, so I don't really know.

reply

Both were magic. Omri's great aunt Jessica Charlotte fed some of her magic into the key by accident. Then when her son's toy factory was ruined by plastic he developed an unhealthy obsession with the substance. At his mothers advice, he trapped this obession in the cupboard, although he didn't believe it. The key, I believe, absorbed some of the cupboard's magic and added it to it's own.

Yes, that is right bransrubar. The way it seemed to me is that the key and the cupboard had two different types of magic.

The way I looked at it is that the key can make any substance travel to different places (people for example) in reference from the second book on. (Omri climbs into the chest and Patrick uses the key and that sends him into Little Bear's time.)

The cupboard on the other hand can only change plastic items.

Anyway, this is just my view on the subject. And for everyone who watched the movie but did not read the book(s), you should do so (even just the first one).

There are 5 books in all.

#1 - The Indian in the Cupboard
#2 - The Return of the Indian
#3 - The Secret of the Indian
#4 - The Mystery of the Cupboard
#5 - The Key to the Indian

In my opinion, they are all very good, but I recommend (reading them all in order of course)reading books one, three, and five.
