Sam Neill's accent slip?

I couldn't help noticing that sometimes his actual accent slipped in some of the scenes, like for instance when he says "Never, Never, Never... throw chips at a driver"; the way he said "never" didn't sound American at all. And then again when he says "That sweet old thing that we met downstairs isn't capable of anything worse than, dipping her dentures into her husband's beer". He sounded Australian when he said "downstairs".

By the way, this is not a criticism. Just an observation.

he had no accent slip because he never once sounded american in this movie, nor did he sound like he was trying to put an accent on. i don't know where some of you are getting this idea that he tried to put an accent on

reply

Because he didn't sound Irish nor British either. I very much doubt that was his natural accent. Must've been putting on something.

They never really said where he was from. It was just implied. Given the ambiguity of the accent and having heard him do intentional American accents better in other movies one would have to assume this is possibly intentional. Since he's really the product of Sutter Cane's writing one would assume this is how he was written.
