I wish to hell "In the Bleak Midwinter" were available on DVD! Okay, it's not a blockbuster. It is, however, a grand view of the inner battle to get a play on its feet. As a director, you have to love actors. I mean really! Actors do make it hard!
This little gem of a film reminds me why and how to love them again!
I want a DVD, too. This particular film is one of my Christmas favorites, and of course it's a good movie to watch when you're feeling cynical about the state of the world.
yep. We have it among our Christmas watch films. We just watched it three nights ago--between the Geo. C. Scott and Alistair Sims "Christmas Carol" films.
I completely agree! It's one of my favourite films and I have no copy! Who publishes it? Please would somebody get it out on dvd! Why is it not available?
I got a video copy of the film from the little laser disc store I used to go to. The owner had gotten a preview copy on tape and he loaned it to me. The store went out of business before I got a chance to return it. THAT's the only reason I have a copy today. My wife and I watch it every Christmas season along with "A Christmas Story," "A Christmas Carol" and "Miracle on 34th Street."
www.FeralFiction.com says it's now closed. I wish to heck this would come out on DVD my parents showed me this movie just a few weeks ago and I laughed my butt off. Add me to the DVD release list please. I thought it was such a great farce of the Woody Allen flicks.
Feral indeed is gone. Stop by my blog and see what else is new. My novel, JUST NORTH OF NOWHERE came out in March.
My wife and I watch our aging videotape of this every Christmas. Along with the Canadian TV series "Slings and Arrows" this is absolutely the best cinematic take on theater life I've seen.
I was loaned a VHS of the film by a coworker, and spent a loooooooong time tracking down a good used copy for myself. I am dying for a DVD copy, and so add my voice to the ones above clamoring! This is a wonderful love song to the acting profession, and shows why actors get into this business instead of going for something a bit more sensible like being a plumber or an accountant.
To the person who commented above on the different versions of Christmas Carol ... those are two of my 'must view' holiday features, too! Add in the Albert Finney musical version (if only for his 'I think I'm going to like children!'), A Claymation Christmas (a must for anyone with children), Polar Express (like watching paintings come to life), It's a Wonderful Life (obvious reasons) and Beauty and the Beast's Enchanted Christmas (can't have enough of Belle and her prince).
And that's totally off topic ... sorry. Does anyone know if Kenneth Branagh has a website so we could petition him personally for a release?
Can't understand why this hasn't had a dvd release as yet. My VHS must be about worn out...fantastic Christmassy film with a great cast. Cast off thy coloured nightie!
From the opening lines and the Woody Allen-esque credits to the very end, this movie is a gem. Great cast, wonderful story, gorgeous script - heaven only knows why this isn't out on DVD. According to hmv.co.uk (the only site on which I've ever even found reference to this film), even the video is no longer available. I've got a copy I taped off telly years ago and would love a copy of this on DVD.
With all the trash that's making its way to DVD release these days, you'd think someone'd release a cult classic like this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm writing all this down in my memoirs so if I grow up twisted & warped, the world will know why. (BBM)
I have a video that was given to me by the owner of a laser disc store. The video was a preview copy from the distributor intended to attract buyers of a laserdisc that never happened.
I'm afraid people like us who like this movie (i. e. good-looking and intelligent moviegoers with taste) are not the target demographics for these people nowadays.
I've been waiting for this film to be released on DVD for what seems like years! It's an absolute classic and it really deserves a release. Surely Mr Branagh could encourage it? Is it worth us writing to him?
Unfortunately my VHS player has recently gone to the great recycling tip in the sky, so I can't even watch my old video copy now either :(
