Er....why the title??

Someone DID know. Her sister! She saw the bruises and Katie told her it was Jimmy. (???)

Yeah, I never understood the title either. Both the mother and the neighbor knew too.

reply

Yes, her mother, sister and neighbor knew but ignored it and what I have to say about that is if you are witnessing domestic violence, you need to report it instead of ignoring it because if you don't, you're just as guilty.

reply

I think it means if someone had known sooner she wouldn't have been put in that situation(if that's how you spell it). Jimmy started out all sweet so you wouldn't have suspected anything, Katie didn't, but then he turned scary and she kinda just brushed it off. She thought if she did everything how he wanted it would go back to how everyone else saw him. The mom and sister only knew of one time he hit her and the neibor just brushed it off because he thought it wasn't his place to say anything.

He hit her and we all saw that and we all know that he could have done something worse. During the time they were together, did we ever see Jimmy hit Katie? Yes! And what were the circumstances that would lead to his hitting her? He would hit her but because she would aggrivate him. He'd tell her to do something and she wouldn't do it. Just that kind of stuff. She'd do it to get attention even though he told her not to. I remember one day, her back was bruised really bad. So, her sister was like "That's it! That's it! I'm gonna talk to Jimmy!" I just thought that if he hurt her, she would leave him. I mean, who's gonna stay with a guy who hits you? He can't force her to stay, right? Besides, when Katie and Jimmy were dating and before their first son was born, nothing ever happened to her then. There was just no way he would hurt her then. You know how guys are always talking or what they did to a girl or what they're gonna do but everybody knows it's just talking. It's not real and Jimmy was always a hunk to her. So when her neighbor saw him hit her, I mean there was a part of him that...Okay, he should have stopped it but he's just thinking it's their marriage. "I love him." That's all she said. Whatever he did, It was like she was under his control, you know. Her sister begged her to let her tell but she was so afraid of what her father would think of her if he found out and she did not want to disappoint him, she did not want to disappoint her father, she did not want to let her father down. The moral of this movie is to all other family members and neighbors out there, if you are witnessing one of your family members or one of your neighbors being in an abusive marriage, you need to speak out. She may disappoint the family and you may be interfering in her marriage but you could be saving her life. If I were the judge in this movie and after the jury found Katie not guilty and before I adjourned the court, I would admonish the sister and the neighbor for witnessing Katie's marital abuse and not speaking up and if I were Katie, her sister or her neighbor, I would have told her father about her marital abuse because in situations like these, I can't keep a secret.

Lifetime movies sometimes have stupid names. There's a movie called "She Fought Alone" (I think that was it) and in the movie, she didn't really fight alone, there were people on her side. In this movie, basically everyone could see what was going on, but for some reason or another they ignored it. The title is just one aspect of this movie that's weird.

Well, for those people in this movie who could see what was going on but ignored it for one reason or another, If you know someone you care about is getting abused rather its a woman, man, or child you should step in and do something to save his or her life. I think that this story is too common and some do get away. That is sad to even thnk about! This movie does have a good msg..if you are in this situation, get out while you can. But I also soooo strongly disagree with how everyone especially, her older sister, Sharon and her neighbor, Mr. Evans handled it. If anyone I know especially, one of my family members or one of my neighbors was getting beat up by her husband every day, I would tell someone...I don't care if she said she doesn't want to let the family down or whether it's my place to say anything or not. I would much rather have her disappoint the family and butt in to her abusive marriage than to just ignore it for one reason or another.

Maybe the title is meant to be taken as the cliche phrase used when you hear about domestic abuse. In lots of abuse cases people outside the couple do know it's happening, but they don't do anything about it, because they don't want to interfere with other people's private lives. Once one of the couple ends up dead, the by-standers just say "if only I had known" or something like that. It's like when there's a big shooting in a mall and all the neighbours say that the shooter "always seemed liked such a nice guy", but when you dig a little deeper, they start remembering things like "oh yeah, I did think it was a little weird when I saw him loading his cart full of ammunition at the local Wal-Mart".

reply

Yes, but if you know someone who's being abused and you do nothing, you're just as bad as the abuser. You're no better and besides, when Katie was found not guilty and before Jimmy's parents apologized to her, they should have had the judge tell the witnesses to tell someone if anyone they know is being abused instead of standing by and doing nothing implying how it could have saved Katie from Jimmy's wrath.

There's not always much you can do about a woman (or man) being physically abused, if the person doesn't want you to.
You can call the police if you see the person being struck of course, and you can tell relatives of the victim about what you know (especially if its a teen).
But otherwise, its their decision to leave and/or press charges.
Trust me, I've had TOO much experience with victims like this. In my own family.

Yes but still, Katie's mother, her older sister or her neighbor should have at least mentioned the abuse to Katie's father.

The title could be meant in two ways. One or the other or both

1. If Someone Had Known, meaning this is what a lot of people say because they did know but either didn't do anything about it or chose to believe the violence was due to something else other than domestic abuse. For example, a neighbor sees a husband being violent toward his wife. The neighbor might know it is domestic violence but use any number of excuses to not report it.

2. The title could mean if someone had known in the sense of knowing and then actually doing something about it. Since a lot of people in this movie did know she was being abused and did nothing, I'm thinking this might be why the movie was titled this way.

Could be and I was surprised that Katie's mom, sister and neighbor knew but didn't say anything to her dad who was a cop. I would have, after she asked me if my spouse ever hit me or after I saw bruises on her or after I saw the bringing the baby home from the hospital incident at least. Even if I convinced Katie to leave Jimmy or if I made her promise to leave him if he beat her again or if I saw her try to leave him, I still wouldn't take chances. They DEFINITELY should have said something before someone ended up getting shot.

reply

I think nothing was said to the dad because they knew he protected the abuser and he also was abusive to his wife. They didn't stand up the victims of the abusers he was protecting or excusing and they didn't stand up for his wife. This, in turn caused them to not do anything about Katie being abused. The incident about the baby coming home from the hospital was a tough scene to watch.

reply

But still, Katie's mother, sister and neighbor should have at least mentioned the abuse to her father who was a cop. And about the part where you said that her father abused her mother, the irony about that was that Katie's problem was worse than her mother's.

Yes but still, don't you agree that others should have at least mentioned Jimmy's abuse towards Katie to him?

reply

in the scene where her sister saw the bruises and Katie told her it was Jimmy, her sister showed signs that she cares about Katie and wants to help her.

reply

Consider the probability that the title simply sucked.
