Uncut version on DVD in the UK

Second Sight recently released the uncut French theatrical version on DVD in widescreen (2.35:1). The transfer is acceptable - not bad but could have been better - and there's also a 28-minute interview with Rappeneau on the disc. Since the French DVD has no English subtitles, importing a copy looks like the best bet for those in the US with multi-region players.

"Gentlemen, is this a great moment or a small one? I'm afraid I don't know."

Its better than the US Miramax edition - its uncut and anamorphic, however there is huge amount of edge detection and contrast boosting. In many shots the last frame before an edit is several shades lighter causing the whole frame to jump. Considering the French version is reportedly excellent this is a pity because we have a substandard subtitled edition when much better PAL version is in existence...
