what's the overall message of this film?

I saw the movie twice now on HBO recently and I still don't know what the overall message is. It seemed like 10 messages at once.

Also, did anyone else think it was messed up Finn cheated on her fiance?

reply

The overall message is as follows: The only good man is a dead man.

reply

Its not so much a message as a collection of beautiful and touching stories. And that's like y'know how life happens and how it progresses from generation to generation.

For me the message was simply: Don't judge a book by it's cover.

No matter how anyone appears on the outside, everyone has their own private sorrows and struggles. How we deal with our bad times determines who we become. We either become stronger and more confident in ourselves or we can become embittered and afraid of life. Although most of us seem to become a myriad of different shades in between the extremes.

There is probably supposed to be some kind of metaphor mixed into all of Maya Angelou's dialog on the importance of balance in the quilt, but I have always been crap at figuring out symbolism.

I do think it was messed up that Finn cheated on Sam. Especially since Sam seemed like such a nice guy and the farmer, although gorgeous, seemed like such a jerk.

a film with only 1 message is a dull film..

Not necessarily. It depends on what the message is. Most films only have one message.

To me, it is a movie that talks about love, but not only the love of a couple, which is the one we are always focusing on, but the love between sisters, mother and daughter, the love for a husband, the love for a place or a circumstance.

How many times have we all felt very alone after a breakup and w seldom notice we are surrounded by love? Family and friends are there next to us, and yet we under rate that love because it's not the passionate love.

It was messed up for Finn to cheat on Sam. There is a scene were it appears as if Sam were cheating on her, although that is never clarified. Finn might've used that as a means to justify her sleeping with someone else.

Good opinion!

Well, like you, I was a bit confused by the message of the film. After watching the movie three times I think I have figured it out. This is just my theory: the theme of the movie is the exact same theme of the quilt "Where Love Resides". Each of the little stories, in the film, point to who each individual character's "true love". This didn't necessarily have to a ROMANTIC LOVE, but it could be something as typical as a love between sisters (like the case with Glady & Hy) or between Mother and daughter (like with Anna & Marianna). Finn's true love was Sam, not Leon. Its undying, unconditional love like this that makes life worth living, even if it isn't perfect.

COME NOT BETWEEN THE DRAGON AND HIS WRATH

The message for me was: Follow your own heart and make your own decisions. There's no perfect way to love someone.

I think Finn was hoping to get an answer from all these beautiful women, on whether or not she was making the right choice by marrying Sam.

You can tell she's trying to convince herself not to marry Sam when she hears Mariana's story and after her mother tells her she's remarrying her father. But then she's immediately confused when Mariana admits to loving a soul mate and her mother admits to being wrong about her father.

She's convinced men cheat because monogamy is unnatural after hearing Em's story.

But then she realizes that Sam is right for her, and she came to that decision all by herself.

Life will be filled with many, many different experiences, and we shouldn't rely on the experiences of others to help shape our own. We also shouldn't have this notion of what love should be, but rather, how we'd like it to be for ourselves. Love isn't perfect, but definitely worth experiencing, and I think Finn realizes this by the end of the film.

I agree. That's the same thing I thought when the film ended.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

Just finished watching this movie on netflix...not entirely sure how I felt about it, there were bits I liked and bits I really didn't like. But anyway, I think to sum it up, the last voice over with Finn talking about Anna's advice on life, using the quilt analogy was the overall message. The whole thing about carefully choosing the people in your life is like choosing patterns and colors for a quilt, and how it all comes together, etc.,
