black characters: racism?

how did you feel about the way the african american characters are portrayed?

reply

The same as everybody else in the film: silly.

reply

Ditto. Everybody in this movie is very goofy.

reply

Everythings racist these days. You're gonna tell me blacks dont commit more crime than the average white? This movie was just a simplified view of how the Chinese view America, and if a Chinese or Korean guy set up a shop in a major American city, chances are it's gonna black criminals pestering him more than some nazi skinheads. Call it racist, but it's true.

reply

Your post doesn't make much sense. Make up your mind. Besides this movie is american, not chinese. When Jackie came over here and worked on this film the script was already finished. Jackie has never ever had full control over his american films such as he has in China. He was responsible for coreographing and directing the stunt sequences. So don't blame the chinese people.

lol, theres another person trying to make an overly sensitive point about race in a jackie chan movie. same happened at the mr nice guy board. but I think they had an equal opportunity gang... they had an italian looking leader, a white blond guy, an asian guy, a black guy, a puerto rican looking guy, and another asian dude trying to look native american. i think they covered all the bases : )

reply

What a stupid and ultra-sensitive posting>>> Keuong { Jackie Chan }, was pleasantly surprised that his uncle was marrying a black lady, but there was nothing negative and there was not even one degrading joke about it. The wedding scene was a happy one, and Keuong was happy working with both of them in the store.
And all the main gangsters were non- black.
If anything, this movie did a courageous move to introduce a Chinese/black marriage in a positive manner which was "RARE" in Asian movie history.
Just WHAT MOVIE WERE YOU WATCHING ?!?!?!?!
WHERE IS RACISM IN THIS MOVIE???

reply

exactly, this movie is good clean fun and should be celebrated if anything about its use of racial relations, not racist in the slightest

reply

You don't put blacks in a movie you whiners piss and moan, you DO put blacks in a movie and you whiners only want them to be shown in a positive way. Get over it and stop crying racism to get a free ride.

reply

WHile this is clearly NOT a racist flick in the slightest, I think he was referring to the black gangsters that sold the diamonds (all dressed up like guys in Blaxploitation films, gold chains, driving pimpmobiles, etc.).

"Hey you smokin Mother Nature, this is a bust!"-The Who
"The Legend will Never Die!"-Soul Calibur

reply

reply

No black characters = racism.
Black characters shown as anything OTHER than angelic saints = racism.

Get over yourselves people! The black people in this movie were silly and goofy yes, but guess what, so were all the other people from all the other races. All of the white, Latino, Italian etc. characters were nothing but major stereotypes as well. I don't hear whites or Italians coming onto these boards screaming "racism!", it's always black people complaining. Grow up please!

reply

You're f-cking kidding, right? This was the most culturally diverse gang in human history. Evey child on the planet, holding hands across the Earth on a rainbow bridge made of sunshine and tolerance would be less culturally sensitive than the street gang in this movie.

Feelin' uninspired, think Ill start a fire

reply

I agree. The street gang was much more ethnically diverse than it would be in real life.

I've lived in Los Angeles, one of the most culturally diverse places in America, for 30 years.

Gangs used to be a big problem here, and one thing they didn't have in common with the city's nature was diversity. Latino gangs, black gangs, white gangs, asian gangs, not much in the way of mixing.

While everyone seems to be sticking (humorously) to stereotypes, it's pretty clear the casting directors and possibly the writers and Director went through unusual effort to mix things up. Maybe to balance out the stereotypes, or maybe to reflect the cultural diversity of New York.

So, yes, there's some stereotyping going on, but it's across-the-board, mostly good natured, and inoffensive unless you're looking to take offense in the first place. Nothing I would call racist.

Black friends who have seen the movie with me found the wedding between Jackie's father and a plump black woman delightful.

reply

I know it's so stupid to claim racism in ANYTHING. It is crying wolf and disrespectful to actual racism.

reply

Yes indeed.
