The most honest holiday film.

Agreed?

"Ah, ya's fancy pants, alla ya's"
"Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."

although we don't celebrate thanksgiving here in the netherlands, I agree, because no matter what holiday, the family-part is everywhere the same

reply

Yes it is. My family is exactly like this. I recognize everyone in that movie as a member of my family.

Maybe it is pretty honest, if your family is a bit off. But my family gatherings have always been wonderful and joyful, we always get along!
But there are problems in every family though, so maybe we we will have a gathering like this, who knows?

Although I do think that Home for the Holidays type of movies are more realistic than the happy ones, so it is honest!

Yes

Sure there may be some disputes during the holidays but if my holidays would go like this I'd really be worried and probably stop going there.

reply

Oh, yeah. It's one of the few holiday/Christmas movies I can tolerate. The family interaction is almost too uncomfortable to watch, yet none of the characters is set up as the bad guy.

Charmed, charmed, charmed!

I think it's incredibly realistic - amazing script.
You hate some people in your family, and you love some to distraction. There are so many universal truths in this movie:

-some people truly love and get along with their parents (Claudia and Tommy)
-some siblings will never be friends - EVER (Joanne and her siblings)
-relatives are often crazy (Aunt Glady, arguably the father playing his organ and washing cars)
-even the relatives you love will drive you insane sometimes (Tommy taking pics of Claudia in bed and in the shower)
-no one is perfect (the entire cast of characters)

i think the best line in the movie (among HUNDREDS) is when Tommy tells his mother, "You're a pain in my ass with your smoking and your bad wigs...but I like you a lot."
That definitely sums up the way I often feel about my family, and sometimes dearest friends.

So glad others love this masterpiece of a movie as much as I do!!

Totally agree with everything you said here!

I absolutely adore this movie. It is my family in a nutshell. My sister who is two years younger than me is Joanne. Literally. She has to be in control, and if she isn't, you better be out of the line of fire. And with my youngest two sisters, we're like Tommy and Claudia.

I agree totally! Can see so much of my own family in this film.
