Victor's visions/daydreams(?) about Callie (may contain SPOILERS)

I just finished watching this movie and I liked it a lot, but I have so many questions about it.

What were the scenes with drowned Callie about?

I'm assuming that they are associated with his mother's death in some way, but am not sure how or why. (Why would Victor's mind tie in his mother's death with the death/drowning of a beautiful girl?)

If your memory is a little fuzzy, there are two scenes where Victor sees Callie.

The first is when he is walking home from the drug store and looking for his dog, which had escaped from its leash. This is right before he gets home to find his mother collapsed.
He is walking across the bridge, looks over the edge and sees Callie floating face up in the water. We cut to Victor carrying Callie out of the river and laying her on the ground to perform CPR on her. She coughs ups some water and wakes up, then Victor stands up and they kind of look at each other, and then Victor looks up at the jet plane flying across the sky (that's recurring another thing I'm curious about, what does it mean??).

The second time drowned Callie comes up is towards the end of the movie right before Callie comes with the box of chocolates to go see Dolly at the hospital with Victor. Callie (her hair and clothes are wet and she is wearing the same dress she was wearing in the above scene) is suddenly at the table and sits down to take a bite of the scrambled eggs left on the table (the ones Victor made for Dolly that he doesn't clean up until the very end).

The reason I think it has something to do with Victor's mother is because the first scene it happens in happens right before Victor goes home to find his mother collapsed on the bathroom floor. The second scene happens right before they go visit Dolly at her grave, and the Callie vision takes a bite of the scrambled eggs that Dolly was supposed to have for breakfast.

I'd appreciate any help, including anything about the recurring jetplane!

I think you answered your own question in your last paragraph.
