This movie is a example of why...
... I never watch some series or movies again.
They are so perfect that I'm afraid I'd start to notice the flaws if I watched them again.
Breaking Bad... Justified... have resisted all temptation to re-watch them.
I've seen this one twice, but never since. Everything about it... the cast is a collection of alpha males all at the top of their game... rich distinctive characters... What really made it for me though was Mann's A-game directing.
Watch the way he uses light in this movie -- it's brilliant. As an example, at the end, we think McCauley and Eady are going to drive off to a happy life together as they enter the bright tunnel. But, as they emerge from the tunnel in the night, everything gets dark again, and simultaneously we see De Niro's expression change as he makes the fatal decision to go back.
And did L.A. lights ever look as gorgeous at night from a balcony? I think not. They were the stars in the sky of McCauley's budding romance.
Mann's use of sound is also brilliant. When you hear the firefights, you hear the rounds zipping throught the air and pinging off objects so damn crisply. The firefight in Miami Vice is also great in that regard.
This one is in my top ten. Maybe I'll allow myself the luxury of watching this again in a few years.
