Figured it out 16 minutes in (SPOILERS}

About 16 minutes into the film when Nanny Tess backs away from Kate Beckinsale at the house I realised what was going on with the characters being dead and all. Kind of made the rest of the movie a little dull and boring, even if there were a few minor surprises right at the end. There were other clues as well - Kate showing up out of the steam at the station, the lack of contact with outsiders, the lack of in-depth questioning about who Nanny's ghosts were, Nanny's reactions to the siblings and Dr. Anyone else have this problem?

All very obvious to someone watching it in 2013, 18 years after it was released. And that's your problem. In 1995, the twist ending/ghost plot theme had not been done to death (this was 4 years before The Sixth Sense), so audiences were not accustomed to noticing the telltale signs like we are today.

Good point. Some of the magic and surprise of film has been lost simply through watching so many movies. And I have to admit, as a horror/supernatural/mystery movie fan, I do tend to almost try and find the clues.

Also, when the gypsy fortune teller reads Christina's palm, she closes the palm and says to her, "there is nothing I can tell you that you do not already know", meaning that since Christina is dead, she knows everything that has happened in her past and that she has no future to enable a fortune teller to read.
