Harrison Bergeron DVD release

I have a really old grainy VHS copy of this wonderful challenging movie.

Cypress Films in their latest newsletter (January 2007) have indicated that they are moving towards a DVD release. Great news !

I hope its available soon.

I hope so. I have an old VHS copy too, but this movie deserves to have the deluxe DVD treatment. It is incredible under-rated. HB is one of the best Sci-Fi movies I've ever seen.

reply

That's great news, i've been looking around for this movie after i watched this in creative writing class.

VERY great news... I cannot find my VHS copy (probably lost in one of my many moves) and I would LOVE to have this on DVD!!!!!

I had written to one of the producers of this film last fall (after finding an email address on a corporate website) and he had said that they are going ahead with the DVD. I mentioned the frequent requests for this film on IMDB and he seem a little surprised that so many people fondly remember this made for television film. Hopefully we will get it before the end of the year because this deserves to be available. It is too good of a film to just be limited to infrequent cable television airings.

I hope that you're not pulling my leg. I come here roughly 3 or 4 times a year to check on any DVD news.

I love Harrison Bergeron and have been waiting too long to see it again.

I would not be that cruel ;)
The fellow who wrote to me was Joseph Pierson. He only mentioned that the dvd was in the works and gave no specific or even estimated release date but he did say that he would check out the forum and see if others were interested.

Here is the contents of the email

"Thanks very much for contacting me and for your kind words about our
film. I did not know that Harrison Bergeron has generated a discussion
on IMDb. I will leave a message there with an update on the progress in
the journey toward releasing the film on DVD. It is in the works now. As
soon as I know the release date I will let you know along with the
others who have expressed interest."

It might not hurt to let them know that you are interested as well. If you want it I will P.M it to you (I don't really feel comfortable posting the email address on the website without his permission but you can find it on the corporate site).

I've been waiting for years to see this movie released on DVD. I only got to see this movie once back when Blockbuster was still VHS. Now I don't even have a VHS player in my house, lol. Hope they release it soon!

reply

Me three!
I didn't even know the Vonnegut (RIP, KV) story had been filmed til I tripped over a screening on late nite cable (of course). I barely remember it -- but I remember thinking it was great at the time. Can't wait for that DVD.
(Mighty prescient about the way the Presidency has been heading lately, too. Yeah, I know, this isn't a political blog, and I should keep my politix to myself. From the bottom of my heart, to anyone whom I may have offended with that statement... DEAL. I hadda put up with all the nonsense from your guys all over the [allegedly] "liberal" media for most of the last six years; it's payback time.)

I have been waiting since the release of this film to own it. Please say they will release it on DVD VERY soon! Wait, I'll run over to their website and see...

I googled "Harrison Bergeron DVD" and found the Cypress Films website, so I emailed the writer, Jon Glascoe, who sent me a quick note back and passed on the message to Joseph Pierson, the President of the company. He emailed me back and said he's keeping a list of people who are interested in the DVD and that he'd let me know "if and when" he has news about it.

I'm posting this because, even though I don't want the guy to get bombarded with emails because of me, maybe if enough people express a desire to see the movie on DVD, there will be a greater chance of it happening. We can hope so, anyway!

"Great, just jump all over me, why don't you?
What about the nine kids I DIDN'T lose this week?"

reply

Yes, if it EVER happens. Hopefully it will sometime in the near future, though. This movie's great. I have a copy i made from the VHS, but it sure would be nice to see it on DVD.

reply

UGH! What is taking so long with this DVD release. I absolutely LOVE this movie and the short story it was based on. I don't even own a VCR anymore, i need to have this movie in my life, on a small compact disc, please cypress films, make haste. It would be much appreciated.

I too have been awaiting the DVD release for many years now.
I lent my VHS to an acquaintance that said he could beat the
macrovision anti-copy, but he and my VHS faded into oblivion.
I have since acquired another VHS of the movie, but there's
no telling how long the old machines will hang in there.
Most major VHS tape manufacturers are going to quit selling
the blank tapes in bulk starting in March, so the handwriting
is on the wall folks.
Someone has to start re-releasing these classics like Harrison
Bergeron and Special Bulletin before all copies are lost
through attrition.

still waiting...

.....and still waiting

I would very much appreciate this movie on DVD as well. I've seen it twice, many years ago, on some lazy weekend afternoons and it's stuck with me since. It was so interesting. Whenever I remember it and try to see if there's some kind of DVD out there, I'm saddened to see none. There's some VHS copies selling on Amazon, but I'm afraid that, I much as I enjoyed this movie, $36+ is a little more than I'm willing to pay, especially for only a VHS copy.

...still waiting. I have so many Vonnegut friends who have never seen this, and until it's available online or on DVD, never will. I hope the popularity of 2081 helps renew interest in this.

reply

I would love this on DVD as well. I'm in the UK so the NTSC video version is no good to me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be released sometime... it seems to have been "in the pipeline" for a long time.

Hi God, it's me, Ryan...

DVD, where are you?
