Said male prostitute?

When Said goes to collect money from Asterix he says to him 'you still screwing?" Does this possibly imply that Said has at one time been involved in the sordid underworld of male prostitution. Considering the nature of his character it would not make sense as he seems to be quite masculine, tough guy.

reply

That's interesting because in the booklet I recieved with the Special Edition DVD, it says that Said met Asterix in the male prostitution underworld. I assume Said was once involved in male prostitution or that he knew people within it.

reply

It would make sense as Said did make quite a few sexual references (eg. "Mina", how she likes to be lassoed, unless he was lying) and I feel him being North African would make him more of a catch in the world of male prostitution.

He may have been macho but that's not to say his clients were men, they may well have been women and girls.

The only other options that I can think of are that he dealt drugs like Hubert , that he was into fraud/theft, or that he pimped girls out. Maybe he was a small-time pimp of girls from the banlieues - not his sister of course lol - rather than a prostitute, which is also hard to believe but when your options are limited it's entirely possible. I definitely think he was involved in some sort of sex trade.

reply

Well, something must have been lost in the english translation, because having seen this movie in French, I don't remember any reference to Said being some kind of prostitute or having any links with the prostitution underworld !
Moreover, it doesn't stick with the character of Said : obviously he is some young guy who has hard time to get laid, and who is more sexually-frustrated than sexually active. And this is why he talks about sex so much.

reply

You have a point but viewers do only see a day in the life of the 3 guys. It is safe to say that Said's experience with girls his own age is limited due to the sexual frustration he seems to harbour. The reason prostitution/pimping was suggested was because of the "still screwing" line used when he collects his money (and we never find out what he had to do for that money, though it could've been any kind of favour really). It is out of character but anything's possible when you're desperate. Hubert was calm and had a conscience yet it didn't stop him from dealing drugs. The main sources of money in these scenarios come from drug dealing, sexual services, fraud or petty crime. It's just a suggestion though and it does seem unlikely.

Erm...that's armchair psychology.

It has just been brodcasted (in French) by Arte.tv, and the only sexual reference I can tell is here (poor translation by me)

Asterix — do you want a coke rail?
Said — errr, no
Asterix — Sure?
Said — no, really
Asterix — Com'on, a small line. How is your brother going?
Said — he is going well
Asterix — the mother *beep*
Said — he is doing as usual
Asterix — has he sex as usual?
Said — yes, always. And you?
Asterix — more than ever
Said — so, give me my money back

This is from 2:41 to 3:15 on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4DQFVHfgzk

Is it what you were refering to?

reply

Hi, yes this is the scene, but in the DVD version that I have Said says: "Still scr*wing?" and Asterix replies: "Me, more than ever". Or something along those lines.

reply

There's also the fact that Asterix answered the door wearing nothing but a towel and when he was ready to pay up he tucked the money right above his crotch and told Said to come get it...Can't say for sure though, just making an observation.

For god's sake people, you are WAY off. 'Still screwing?' doesn't mean that much. It's just a decadent's guy attempt of small talk.

reply

I too have noticed this in the special edition booklet and in the Engish subs, it would be interesting to see a perfect French translation of those few lines, as sadly i do not speak French..

Maybe people are reading too much into it, is the debt that Said collects from Asterix not previously transfered from guy who sells stolen good, whose car had been set on fire? who says he has no money, so he tells the trio to visit Asterix?

As said before the time duration is 24hrs so i guess, much lke the beauty of this La Haine, it is upto the audience to decide or to fill in the gaps, which is why i love this film!

the Asterix/Snoopy character's name even changes depending on whether you watch in French or subtitles, so I would tend to blame the translation for the noticeable ambiguity of a statement like "still screwing"

though I had never thought about the towel before, other than as proof that he was crazy or nearly so

reply

These are all very interesting points, as this is my favourite film of all time and I have seen it 20+ times, but never really made anything of that line. I have the 'still screwing?' subtitle version and can't speak French, but I feel people are reading far too much into it.

It appears to me that Said knows Asterix is crazy, but is a necessary evil. He has to keep him happy long enough to get his money, so small talk bordering on flattery is what he decides on. He's clearly not 'above' Asterix in the banlieu's social hierachy so he has no option to scare him into paying up and instead has to play along with his stupid behaviour. On the flip side, Asterix knows Said is 'below' him in intimidation/respect standing, and is looking for an excuse to not give him the money. Vinz provides the excuse, and although I hate the character of Asterix, I have to give him his due!

it appears asterix was high on coke and whatnot. the word screwing he uses also refers to what he was doing with those three brickheads - he was screwing with them and wanted them to get out of his place as quickly as possible to never return. he reminds me of a character from boogie nights - the rich weirdo the di(kheads tried to rob.

I am a french speaker and I re-watched this scene in order to see if I could help in any way. There are strictly no clues towards Said being a prostitute. However Asterix asks about Said's brother, specifying : "is he still *beep* (as in a sexual way).... Whatever that means...
I am very intrigued about this allegation from the DVD booklet though. I think this movie is worth a dissection to find out where they got that from heh heh. Maybe another scene? I sincerely never ever grasped this idea of Said even though I am french and I have seen this movie countless time for almost 2 decades.

This whole discussion makes me think about the rough treatment they got at the police station. The cops turned on Sayid quickly, calling him "cute". That would make it a second time that the director references something ambiguously sexual him (after the money in the towel scene at Asterix' place). And I tend to believe that nothing is there without a reason.

But who really knows.

reply

No, there's absolutely no clue or mention of Said being a male prostitute. Must be a problem with the translation, because you could not possibly get that feeling from the french dialogues...

Why is there always a thread about one of the characters being a homosexual on IMDB ?? Jesus...
