The Zero Cool reveal

Just an observation, and not a criticism, but like in all movies, you have to accept not everything "makes sense."

My favorite in Hackers is when Dade reveals himself to be Zero Cool. His friends, the hackers, have access to information from all over the world, know and love hacker culture, and remember Zero Cool as the little kid hacker genius... but no one remembered his actual name. Even though he's now in their high school.

This movie continues to be super cool 21 years later and is always watchable.

I assumed that Zero Cool's real name was kept out of the press since he was a minor when he committed his most famous hacks. The only way to figure out Zero Cool's true identity would be to hack into court records (Which no hacker seems to have done, perhaps out of respect for Zero Cool or perhaps they just enjoyed the romance of an unknown elite hacker pulling off such a big hack.)

reply

Yeah except his case was apparently national news. His name would have gotten out.

reply

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the newspaper clips were in the film. But oh well.

Robert Tappan Morris' name got out , when he pulled a similar stunt and crashed a similar amount of computers on the fledgling internet. He wasnt a minor though. I think Zero Cool's mass crash was a nod to RTM

Nobody knows who Manfred von Richthofen was, but everyone knows who "The Red Baron" was. Doesn't seem that odd to me that after almost 10 years some hackers who were little kids when he was in the news would only remember his handle and forget his real name, if they ever knew it in the first place.

according to the actual script.. Zero Cool's real name was never mentioned in the news, being that he was only 10 or 11 years old @ that time. I thought that was obvious though.

reply

I thought he was black, man!
