Myth of '90s Fashion

There are a few movies that try so hard to embody a specific time that they go off the rails, but as time passes people assume their representation is accurate. No movie does more of a disservice to '90s fashion than Hackers, particularly the tryhard offender of style Cereal. Absolutely no one in any scene dressed that obnoxious, but already we're 20 years later and people look at him and snicker of '90s fashion.

That happens to every generation. The 80's wasn't as bright as it was on the tv screen.

Says you. I personally owned a closet full of blazers in several neon colors. 😀

reply

I was all about the denim in the 80s

and neon...

Swatch Watches and Hypercolor T-shirts, you must have missed those.

reply

You're correct, obviously most people didn't dress that way in the 90s, but I'm sure there were a few who did.

But the thing is, Hackers is all about style. Everything is a stylized version of reality, not reality itself.

In big cities they were everywhere. I think as population density goes up teens have to be more extreme in order to stand out or "make a statement".
I personally knew dozens of people who dressed as strange or stranger than Cereal. I never knew a girl who wore spandex or a hockey jersey or a bizarre denim file folder back pack/flap thingy, etc. To me, Kate had the unbelievable attire.

Listen,

You dont need to watch this movie drunk for it to be good.

Heres a good lists of things you could be in the mood to, to watch it and realize its not that bad.

Angelina jolie, Angelina Jolie in punk short hair as hacker, Angelina Jolie Young, Angelina Jolie Lips, Watch her and her first husband, bad ass 90's nostalagia, Hacking, High School rememberance, Killer Soundtrack, In the mood for trip hop atmosphere, camp, 90's internet, watching the good guy get the bad girl, Bitter Romance, anti-establishment, government hacks, feel good theater movie, Zero Cool, the list can go on....

Forgot to mention... very extensive and impressive script/ novel on hacking and hacking community.

Not recommended while drunk!

It’s not trying to create an image of the 90s, it was trying to create a stylised version of reality that was edgy, almost futuristic in a trendy way. To me this movie is like a 90s video clip.

Oh yeah, even when I was in that decade, I kept wondering why people wore all these crazy, colorful fashions and wild hairstyles, when nobody was nearly that extreme with fashion in real life.

It took me years to figure out why this was. It's usually due to:

1.) Being done on purpose to keep up aesthetics in the tv show or movie, as well as draw attention to the characters.

2.) Many [less-famous] costume designers live in L.A. and often are completely ignorant of how people dress or do their hair in other parts of the US. So what you're looking at is usually the result of either cranking up Southern Californian styles to 10; or the costume designer is an idiot who didn't do their homework, didn't care, and had no sense of style. You can usually blame many small-time male costume designers for putting shitty outfits on the female actors.

3.) Sometimes it's done on purpose to exaggerate a stereotype or show just or crazy, flamboyant, or extreme the character is.

Cereal never struck me as a 90s fashion icon. He's a total freak doing his own weird ass funky fugly thing.

reply

Next thing you know, someone will say that's not how hacking looks like either.
