Grim and Rawhead Rex related?

I just watched the trailer to this movie and noticed the monster in this film and Rawhead Rex look almost exactly the same. Maybe they are related or maybe the creature designer just copied the look of old Rawhead.

I understand the similarities enough to ask the question but I think this one is based on some campy horror novel that came out in the late 80's but that the monster ate kids and traveled through the town from underground to the empty hollow trees but I could be wrong.
