On the Supposed Lesbain Subtext

I rewatched this last night upon reading that and I love finding subversive subtext in innocent films (I'm a huge Douglas Sirk fan!), but I have to say I don't see it.

Beth and Jody's relationship got intense after Jody saved Bath's life. That kind of thing bonds people. Add the other emotional stuff they were going through; abuse, neglect, death of their dad's, etc. it really put it over the top.

I do agree that Jody's clothes were beyond tomboy, but that's not because she was trying to look like a boy, but like Molly Morgan who disgused herself as a boy. Btw-It was not uncommon for single straight women in the old west to do that because it was safer.

I so agree with you! I own both the VHS and DVD of this film. And I can honestly say I have seen this a zillion times and I would still agree with you!! There friendship does get intense especially when the truth comes out about the abuse and all. But many people are forgetting the main point. Jody was symbolized as the bad girl in town and they thought she couldn't be trusted and she felt she couldn't be her true kind self. Until that one person gave her that chance. When that happened Jody's life was good and she knew that someone did care for the kind person that she was to be. And for that a FRIENDSHIP bonded. Thanx for telling the story on how it really is!!

I agree,too! I have both the VHS and tie-in book of this and plan to get the DVD and stremaing verisons,too~!

I agree with the original poster. I don't see it. These were just two girls who were kids and had a bond. They were best friends. Does not mean there was lesbian subtext in this film.

I guess I'll cut my losses, and turn my tricks at the magic show..

Seems like you're going through quite a few contortions to explain away a possible lesbian subtext in the movie. A subtext obvious to many. Obvious to me in the first few minutes when we see Ricci's character's wide-eyed little pant and excited inhalation when boyish Jody swings around and Beth gets her first head on look at Jody, "the finest woman I ever knew", or whatever romantic thing she says about her.
Suuuuuure. They're just really "good friends". Kind of like those lady friends who've been roommates on your block for decades and garden together. But suspiciously only have one bed.

It sounds to me like you're the one going through contortions to see a lesbian subtext. "Wow! Beth breathes! She must have the hots for Jody!"

There is no lesbian subtext. People see the weirdest things where there's nothing.
