Did Godzilla Win?

Or did Destroyer win? I didn't see, but just want to know.

Yeah, Destroyah, one of the coolest looking monsters, went out like a punk. A giant monster "falls" to its death.

I was also confused at how Destroyah "died"

well, though destroyah is defeated, it's by the military and not Goji himself, meaning Godzilla can never get his revenge for what destroyah did to Jr. Not to mention, his son is dead, and so Godzilla dies in complete agony, both physical pain and emotional pain. Though the enemy is defeated, Godzilla loses in a way. He loses his son, he loses his chance for revenge and he loses his life. I think these things combined (along with, of course, the powerful as hell ifukube score) make the ending very sad, and even though Jr is revived and becomes a new, adult Godzilla, the previous Godzilla had no way of knowing this, as he died before Jr was resurrected.

You never know, Biollante never died and it is implied that Space Godzilla survived, maybe Godzilla lives on through his son.

The series never picked up with Junior and I am glad they didn't. Junior would have been less aggressive than his father, probably more friendly to the humans. It is a way to assure us that Godzilla will live on, finally at peace with humanity. I like to think that Junior will be more powerful than his father. He might even have some powers from the micro oxygen injected in him by Destroyer. The director of Final Wars wanted his Godzilla to be Junior and maybe the reason he was so powerful was because of that. Just my theory.

And Godzilla did manage to badly wound Destroyer, the army would never have been able to kill him without Godzilla.

Ah, but what you don't realize is that Godzilla DOES get his revenge on Destroyer. The only problem is that Godzilla kills him scientifically rather than through violence. The military does not kill Destroyer. They only shoot him down. They make mention (at least in the Japanese version) that when Destroyer falls, Godzilla is not moving out of the way. This is because Godzilla is keeping his position, superheating the ground with his own body. The sudden change in temperatures from freezing cold to blazing hot is what destroys Destroyer (which is Godzilla's doing), not the freeze rays from the defense forces.

Well put - thanks!

There is an alternate cut where Godzilla continues to beat on Destroyer as he is having his meltdown. This was not used in the US version but is included in some of the asian cuts of the movie.
