record player on fire

when the brothers are 'happy dancing', their turntable is playing a great tune, and it is sitting on a lit gas grill. why????

i watch this movie more than 4 times a year. i love it. (speaking platonically, of course)

but i surely do not understand the symbolism of the record player sitting on a lit gas burner. what are they saying here?

is it that in our celebrations, we sow the seeds of our own destruction?

i ask for any and all opinions held in this matter.

1. The music is HOT.

or

2. It's a fire-powered turntable.

There are all sorts of little surreal symbolic nuances thrown into the film, some of them relating to the concept of tragedy versus comedy, some just generally adding to the atmosphere of the setting (the camel walking past the window in the middle of blackpool is one of my favourites).

I must admit the burning of the record player is one I haven't really got to grips with. I can only assume it's symbolic of the death of the period of despair the parker brother's went through while not performing - could it be that they will be performing on a stage with a live band now, not on their on with a record player?... i don't know, but i LOVE the film.

brass and alv, you both have very good interpretations about this and i have nothing to add, unfortunately. it does really intrigue me that of all the unanswered flashes in this film, this bit was the one that got all three of us. Loved the strange bizarro elements in this film and i have just posted a question about it feeling like a marc caro film. would really appreciate your feedback (if you happen to revisit your old posts!)to my post/thread.thank you.
