Why is this film so under rated?

The first time I saw it I was obssessed with it and then I watched the anime which is great. I just got a copy of it on DVD the other night. LONG LIVE GARY DANIELS FOR DOING A GREAT ROLE!!!!!

reply

[deleted]

I consider this movie a "cult classic". I don't care for the cartoon versions, but this movie is great!

reply

[deleted]

VHS is want you use? Hahaha. I though the movie was different from the series and yet very similar. I like that concept for adapting it into a live action film.

reply

[deleted]

I believe this movie is under rated becuase people are comparing it to the anime.

reply

Gary Daniels is a so-so martial artist?

BWAHAHAHA

oh man, oh boy,

he would wipe the floor with that Ong Bak kid.

I'd bet the million dollars that I don't have on Gary.
He'd also wipe the floor with Jet Li, and Jackie Chan.

reply

gary daniels is a 3 time kick boxing champion i wouldn't call that so-so as for the film being underrated i don't know i think most of his films are pretty good keep in mind the budget of the movies he's in. no offense as much as like gary jet li and chan would fry him 2 different fighting styles. you know what would be a good fight though? gary daniels vs. jeff speakmen

reply

Actually Speakman would probably be able to contend with Li and Chan..He is pretty bad ass.

I also like the concept for adapting it into a live action movie, but that's about all I liked. I'm one of those people who honesty thinks that it would have been better had they stuck closer to the series.

First of all, I would have like it better if Bat lived...

reply

omg, from all comments on imdb this has to be the mother comment of ultimate ignorance, if you would have seen the "cartoon" version, which we commonly call ANIME, you'd hit yourself with a train in shame, do the whole world a favour and go watch the anime, so your comments aren't a testament of what an ignorant fool you are

reply

i beleive the original question was

"Why is this film so under rated?"

have you even seen it ? because that alone would answer your question

it not like me talkin about the grifters or point blank and saying "Why is this film so under rated?" because that could be understood

reply

Again..I like the movie...so to em it is under rated.

reply

"why is this film so under rated?"

Anime fans cannot even possibley entertain the thought that *gasp* a Western adaptation of something might be good.

The anime was a moderately entertaining, yet hideously repetitive program. The movie is far from perfect, not even Very Good, but it has good effects, and Daniels is great in the lead role. If you can get your hands on the UK DVD, it has a great audio commentary from him, where he basically states that he wasn't happy with the fight scenes, and the fact it isn't more action packed is Tony Randel's fault.

And Jet Li would not last 3 seconds in a fight against Gary Daniels, look at the size of them. Daniels wouldn't even need to kickbox him, he could probably punch him out.

reply

[deleted]

Wushu is a performance martial art, Li himself admits he would be utterly useless in a streetfight. I really don't see your point that 'kickboxing being a sport' somehow hinders those who use it. Yeah, it's a sport, a sport where the idea is to knock down/out the opponent. They teach moves designed to hurt people. Have you ever actually seen a real fight, in real life?

reply

[deleted]

I wish they had more of those bloody scenes where everyone get killed with just one punch!
And also I really would've liked if they would've kept themselves on the manga story where Shin lied to kenshiro about yuria (no typo's it's yuria in the manga) being alive and he'd commit suicide because he doesn't want to die by ken's
technique!
For the rest I think they made some bad calls by including Jaggie in the story. (even though he wasn't in the first part at all!) and killing of Bat! (when he wasn't supposed to die there either!)
And involving Lin when actually she doesn't show up in the series 'till ken reaches god land to face the evil colonel.
The beginning actually involves Ken being stuck in prison after coming out of the desert, the villagers don't trust'em and there he meats Lin and Bat!
Shin is supposed to be the same size as Ken! Costas however is hardly as tall and doesn't have any of Shin's orignal looks Clothes, Hair, Style Etc.
Well anyway there is so much wrong facts in this movie but I guess they tried.
at least it's tops 2 hours and the fightings are not like in the manga but who knows?

There will always be Kenshiro........

reply

I guess it's underrated because it's based on something else. I thought it was a really great fun film with a few small flaws. But a film will always be judged more strictly when it's based on something made earlier weather film, animation or even comic book.

reply

This film has just been shown on BBC1 and quite frankly I'm stunned. What a steaming pile of *beep* bare to see it through to the end.

Why is it under rated......I'm surprised it even gets on the scale!

Movies like this should be erased from existence so no-one else has to suffer.

reply

Just been shown?

Dude, it's still on (well, in Scotland it is). And I agree... what a steaming pile of crap this film is so far...

reply

i am watching as i post this and it is one of the biggest piles of poop i have ever seen!

And so what if Daniels was a kickboxing champ...... Am i supposed to love the film now cause of that irrelevent statistic?
If it didnt want to be compared with the anime version then it shouldnt half tll the story that the original does!

Even crying freeman was a better cross over!

reply

This film has just finished and it is pretty damm anal, end.

Just to point out, being way too active in practicing martial arts, i do believe that this daniels fella is good, but not great when kickboxing is concerned. He may be a 3x champ and all that but considering the amount of muay thai fighters that just don't enter these comps who could destroy the best we have to offer, it is quite apparent that he is grossly overrated.
He would have a serious time with tony jaa and would probbably lose, not for being rubbish (cause he ain't) but because jaa's style is an extremely hyperactive one that is virtually nonexistant in comps. As for beating Jet Li and J Chan i can see that happening due to their martial arts being heavily performance orientated (like those clowns who do tai chi for health only, and forgetting about its real use).

Anyway, this doesn't stop this film being absolute gash

reply

J Chan's and J Li's MOVIE fighting styles are performance orientated. They don't fight like that in real life.

reply

this film is awful but really enjoyable at the same time just like every jean claude van damme film , they are so bad they are good its just a film to watch for a laugh. i mean what did people expect? amazing sets and stuff which could not have been done becuase of a limited budget and a faithful re-telling of the series i mean come on that would never happen

reply

As a fan of the original manga, the anime series and the animated movie its fairly clear why this film is under rated. The casting, production design, acting, fight choreography and editing to list just a few of its flaws - were totally dire.
Fair enough with the budget this film had it was never going to match the epic scope of the anime, but thats no excuse for shoddy poorly designed sets and exteriors that look like they were shot in a scrapyard. Its also no reason to piss all over the original story. Its difficult to condense years of comics into an hour and a half long film, no doubt, but the animated feature comes pretty damn close to achieving it.
The manga has an epic sense of vastness and a large dose of the fantastic - for example kenshiro can level an entire building with a single punch, or for that mattter with just his chi. He can dispatch huge enemys with the slightest brush of his hand. The enemies he fights are literaly giants among other men, and the violence is on a totally epic ott scale. The film comes nowhere near to capturing any of this. Nor could it.
I love action movies, especially martial arts movies. Even the bad ones are good for a laugh sometimes, but its difficult to laugh when hacks take such fantastic subject matter and deliver their own piss poor version which is totally disrespectfull and inferior to the source material. Im sure gary daniels is a competent martial artist (i'll get back to that) and many people here have mentioned their own martial arts training to somehow validate the fight scenes in this movie.Im not going to bother getting into a pissing contest regarding martial ability here but suffice to say, its not difficult with a bit of flexibility, and practice to deliver a measured roundhouse kick to a stopping point. Im sure there are a million orange belts in tae kwon do and Tang Soo Do classes all over the world who could do it consistently. And doing it over and over and over again in slo mo on film does not a great fight scene make. It makes for an unbelievably boring one, and one that is totally at odds with the fantasy style of the combat in the anime. The fight choreography in this film was totally flat, unimaginative and showed no real diversity of styles. To compond matters the editing of these scenes was mind numbingly bad.
Have I said enough?
It never ceases to amaze me how many people spout off about who would beat who without knowing the first thing about martial arts, combat sports or combat of any kind for that matter. So Daniels was a 3 times kickboxing champ. Really. Do a google search for world kick boxing champ and see how many names come up. A bouncer at a nightclub I frequent is a current 2x world kickboxing champ.A property developer who lives near me is a former 3x world kick boxing champ.I dont doubt the dedication and skill of many kickboxers but there are literally dozens of govering bodies and world champions at any given time at the same weight. Its a farcicall situation. And lets not even mention Muay thai. There isnt a single current world champion in westernised kickboxing who would stand a chance in thailand. Except Mohammed Samir. Who funnily is mainly a muay thai fighter too.
Fighting for the camera is and never will be anything like real combat.Never. And unless youve been in the ring or in a streetfight with the actor/martial artists your spouting about you will never know what their abilies are.
Hopefully the japanese will remake this themselves soon. With todays cg technology it would be possbile to make an accurate adaptation.look at Casshern.Fingers crossed.

I seen this a few years before I got into anime, didn't stop the movie from sucking horribly.

This movie is really underated, I really liked it. The movie may not be like the original, but remember now everyone in the world is a anime geek. Some people probably actually watched without seeing the anime version..

I even did a test, the people who liked the movie mroe were those who didnt see the anime, meaning they couldn't compare it to the original.

To me its a classic already, and they did a good job saying this movie was done in 1995 and only had a 5 million dollar budget.

SPOILER:
To me it was sad what happened to the asian boy :(

reply

To me its sad gary never made it big after the movie.

This movie is terrible. The anime comic and the movie are perfect. The TV series is okay. It would be hard to make a good live-action Fist of the North Star film.

The biggest problem with the movie is obvious to a fan of the comic of TV series. This film doesn't follow the story at all. The only holding this movie to the original anime is the character names, the 7 scars on Ken's chest, and the post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

reply

The problem was that the producers refused to follow the "over the top" action as envisioned by the creators of the original manga and the anime. I *really* wanted them to do that just as was done in "The Story of Ricky", since it too was a manga come to life. The producers realized that would make the film unreleasable and chose to go for a sanitized "R" rating instead (what you can get away with in a comic and what you can get away with on film are two different things..."SPAWN" anyone). Unfortunately, that ruined the film for the purists some of whom (like myself) had been following the manga for many years before anime became much more widespread. This film is a slap in the face to the original manga creators but it's all too common these days....

For those that say the film is better than the original source material, have you read or watched same? I have. I even have some collectables like the big "All About The Man" Hokuto no Ken book (a real rarity) with details on all your fave characters. That came out in 1986, so you can see how long I've been into this series...

reply

the main problem with this film is daniels, they went with a fighting champ (so he could do his own 'stunts') over an actual actor

most wooden performance i've ever seen, and i watch a lot of porn

the scene where he was walking through just taking on inept goon after inept goon was hilarious, they were just queueing up ready to be thrown to the floor, with little contact, i cringed the first time, now i just laugh out loud

oh, but i have seen the manga, and liked it, so i guess i fit your theory of people who like the manga will hate the film, apart from the mates i first watched it with, were not aware of the manga and still (somehow) managed to see how bad this film really is

if u like this film, and not for the comedy factor, do u have eyes????

Basic jist of why this film is underrated: because Gary Daniels is a very talented martial artist and an experienced professional fighter, but he's also arguably the worst actor to ever be put on film, and half of the cast sucks almost as bad as he does.

To all who say he's not a good fighter, I dare you to walk up and challenge him to a fight. Let the term "professional kickboxer" sink in...that means it was his job to fight people and inflict pain upon them while they were trying to do the same thing to him. To have been a world champion 3x means he possesses quite a talent for fighting.

Pretty much, he should have stayed in the fighting world where he was in every way qualified to work in that field. As a film star, he is a sickeningly bad actor.

reply

Worst actor ever put on film eh...Have you ever Seen Shadow Warriors..The whole cast is below Daniels acting on a bad day, and How about Billy Blanks or Don "the Dragon" Wilson...Worse, and if you want to see Gary give Some A-list list performances acting wise then check out Bloodmoon or Black Friday.

And Yes, this movie make the horrid manga anime comic look bad..

Get to da Choppa!
