Age

How old is Mrs. Banks in this movie?

reply

I'm guessing she was about 48. Personally, I don't think they needed her to be pregnant as well. It was kind of unrealistic to me. How many people would have 12 year age differences between their kids? I think the movie could have been just as good with only Annie being pregnant. They could have her pregnant with twins. I would LOVE to see how George would react to that! Also, I found it kind of annoying that George was so upset that the baby's last name wouldn't be Banks-Mckenzie and Nina thought they should drop the MCkenzie. Come on! They had Matt to carry on the name as Brian's father pointed out. Otherwise it was an OK movie.

My sister was born when i was 13! So its very realistic, although my mom wasnt 48 when she was born though.
I thought it was sweet to have both of them pregnant , very fun.

It was an interesting plot idea. Not the most original, but it just had to be done, if only to try it out! Oh, and my grandma is over twenty years older than her youngest living sister.

A girl I knew named Sarah was the fourth child out of six born to her parents, who started young. I believe her mother and father were both in their very late thirties/early forties when the youngest was born, and here are the children's age gaps:

Daughter 1: 26
Son 1: 24
Daughter 2: 23
Sarah: 20
Son 2: 12
Son 3: 2

Which means between the oldest and youngest there is a 24 year age gap! Then you have big ones between Sarah, her younger brother, that brother and the youngest.

So it's not unrealistic for children to have large age gaps in families, it's just uncommon. But I think most people at least know someone who has some family members with some weird age gaps between siblings.

Back to the movie, I too always wondered Diane's age. I missed a lot of the movie, seeing it in gaps, but I never remember them saying their specific ages, just Steve Martin commenting that the child would be starting kindergarten when they were in their fifties (not fifty), meaning they both had to be over 45. So my probem was why wasn't there a big focus on how high risk the pregnancy was for Diane Keaton's character? The extreme high probability of Down Syndrome? How about the birth itself? Just seemed a little strange to me that everyone acted like it was no big deal for a very old woman (in terms of reproducibility) to be pregnant.

reply

[deleted]

That "extreme probability of Down Syndrome" is actually only about 5 percent, which, when you put it another way, translates to a 95% chance of her baby NOT having Down Syndrome. We do not know exactly how old Nina is, but at 45, the odds of NOT having a baby with Down are 97%, and at 50 it is about 90%. The figures vary slightly according to which study you look at, but regardless, the odds of having NOT having a Down baby are in Nina's favor. (If your doctor told you that you had a 90% chance of beating cancer, you would feel pretty confident, now wouldn't you?)

If the movie is in line with the year it came out, nina should be 48.

In the first movie she tells George that she was 22 when she had Annie
Annie was 22 when she got married in the first movie making Nina 44.
The first movie was released in 1991
The second movie was released in 1995
with 4 years between movies, Nina would be 48.

reply

In the first movie George mentions that Annie is too young to get married, and Nina says that Annie is as old as Nina was when she gave birth to Annie. So, if Annie is 22 in the first movie, then Nina is 44 in the first movie. So, now we just need to determine what the spacing is in movie years...2...3 years maybe? So Nina is probably around 45, which is not that old to be having a child...especially a third child.

I watched the end of this the other day and thought "Huh, his child and his grandchild being born on the same day; weird." Then my brain decided to work. That's what happened when I was born. I was born on the same day as my niece (who is 9 hours older than me). My eldest nephew is 18 months older than me, my oldest sibling (their father) is 24 years older than me, my sisters are 13 years older than me and then another brother is three years older. At least me and my niece weren't born in the same hospital.

Cher coeur, comment comme vous ceci?

Seriously? One of my sisters is 15 years older than me, and the other one is 12 years older...

reply

In the first movie she's 44 since she said she was Annie's age (22) when she had Annie. So she's probably 45-46 in this movie.

And for those who feel it's unrealistic, my mother was 20 when my sister was born, 22 when my brother was born, 38 when my other sister was born, 40 when my nephew was born, 42 when my niece was born, 43 when my other nephew was born and 44 when I was born. Which means my sister is 24 years old than me, my brother is 22 years older than me, and I have two nephews and a niece that are older than me.

reply

My brothers are 11 and 13 years older than my and my half-siblings are 12 and 16 years younger than me. More common than you think.

His age depends. When George asks one of his employees who some famous men are who are older than him, two of the names she mentions are Jack Nicholson and Bill Clinton. She says George is 8 years younger than Nicholson and 1 month younger than Clinton. Nicholson was born in 1937 and Clinton was born in 1946, a 9 year difference. So you can pick what year you want George to have been born, 1945 or 1946, but that is a goof in the movie.

reply

So wow, he was more like 48.

I just watched it again yesterday and he did not say kindergarten, he said preschool. Which does bump up her age to more like geez, 47 or the same as him, 48. And still after rewatching it no one seems to care about the health of the baby or Nina with her being that old. I mean I know she is healthy and in shape but WTF?

I am not revealing my name to protect the innocent.

It is not uncommon for their to be a huge age gap between siblings, my grandmother's sister was 16 when my grandmother was born. Also a girl that I went to school with Treshur was a junior in high school when she had an infant sister, now Treshur is married with a baby and Tristan who was a baby when Treshur was a junior is 8 and she will be turning 9 before April 2007 is over.

There's a 10 year gap between me and my elder brother, and a 5 and a half between him and my sister and the same gap between me and my elder sister.

So it can happen!

Everyone thinks its weird, some of my mates when I mention my brother round them are like I never knew you had a brother, I was talking to a girl I'd known since I was 5 and she said to me I never knew you had a brother a few weeks ago, I find it amusing.

I myself loving having the age gaps beause you can look up to them and they can advise you god the number of times I've asked my sister for advice! (Not so much my brother tho, thats a whole different story lol)!

There is a 12 year between my mother and her youngest sibling. MY aunt is still referred to as the "Whoops! baby" because my grandmother was 43 when Donna arrived.

It isn't so unusual for women to have babies in their fourties. Okay, some of them have to use invitro, but there are exceptions to every rule. And doing the math: Nina was 21 when she married George, 22 when she had Annie. Annie was 22 when she married, and probably 24 when she became pregnant, which would put Nina at 45-46. It can happen.

In fact, there was a story on GMA a couple years ago where a mother and daughter had babies one day apart. No invitro.

My sister was almost thirty when I was born! Her kid is a year older than me!

Well, from seeing the movie, the first one "father of the bride" made in 1991, Annie (the daughter) said she was 22 when they were getting married. And assuming father of the bride two took place a year or two later, that would make her 23 or 24. Then, since Annie said in the first movie that "she's old enough because she is a year older than her folks when they got married..." meaning they got married at 21 and then had Annie so Annie and Nina have a 21 or 22 year age difference, meaning at the time Annie was pregnant with her baby, Nina was 23 + 21 meaning 44. It's kind of a weird thing to be pregnant that late in age, but yeah I guess it happens, but very rarely. My mom tried to have anouther baby at 39 but she misscarried. But then, my mom has an inverted uterus so she misscarried twice (her first and last child). I'm the middle child. Anyway, so yeah, it does happen, but I think it's weird and it's too old of an age gap. My mom and I have a 31 year age difference and I would find it weird if she got pregnant at 54!! That's WAYY too old!! Too many health risks for the baby and her.

By the way, how old was Annie's younger bro? 13? He looked it, so if he was 13, that would mean that in 1995-13, he would have been born in 1982, and since Annie was 23 then, that means there's a ten year difference between them. And a thirteen/fourteen year difference with the new baby (his new brother) and his niece.

Well, in the first movie, George remarks that Annie was in grade school when they bought the house. Then a few years later they got a surprise package: Matty. Annie would have been about 6 or 7 when they bought the house and about 11 or 12 when Matty was born. That would have put Nina at 34. Later, George states that they have been going to the Steak Pitt for 15 years. That would have put Annie at 7.

There would be about 24 years between Annie and Meagan. And 12-13 years between Matty and Meagan. But George jr is older than Meagan.

age gaps are not that uncommon.
my mum has 5 children. she first got pregnant in 1984 but suffured a miscarrage, but them in 1985 she had my sister kirsty, a year later she had my sister amy. in 1990 she had me, 5 years later in 1995 she had my brother aiden who had downssyndrome she was only 33, then in 2003 she has my brother callum who was perfectly healthy when she was 40. so thats a 18 year gap between my siser kirsty and brother callum.

reply

I am 19, my older sister is 21, and my youngest Aunt just turned 24. My Grandmother walked down the aisle of my Mom's wedding pregnant with my Aunt, so the whole age gap thing is not that big a deal. Besides, it's kind of cool, because now we're all the same age, and it's kind of like having another sister.

reply

In the first FOTB, George is arguing with Nina about how Annie is too young to get married, and Nina says, we were a year younger than her. We know Annie is 22, so they were 21 when they got married, and Nina also reveals Annie was born the year after. Therefore, Nina was 22 when Annie was born, and when Annie got married, Nina was 44 (in the first FOTB)... This is approx. 4 years after the wedding, so Nina is about 48 years of age, and Annie is 26.

reply

Watch Father of the Bride II right now, and Nina and George were arguing about something and the age of Matty is said to be 12 years old. Does that help anyone in doing the math on Nina's age? Does anyone remember if it was mentioned in the first movie how old Matty was? If so, the "time frame" between the two movies has been solved and we now know how many years to add to Nina's age of 44 in the first movie (22 when she had Annie, plus Annie's was 22).

reply

In Father of the Bride, Annie is 22 and Nina tells George that she gave birth to Annie at the same age, 22. I think Matty is about 8 in the first film (if it was being judged by the time between the release dates of the first two films) and 12 in the second film. Therefore Annie could be about 26 by this point (this would make more sense in terms of her career). That would make Nina 48 having her third child.

reply

I'm watching this now and when they are in the process of selling the house, George says that they have lived there for 18 years. He then says that the first time he and Annie played basketball in their driveway she was 4 years old. This would me that she's still 22 in this movie, presumably 23 by the time she has the baby. Based on this, the beginning of the second movie is supposed to be a short time after the first so Nina is probably 44/45 at the beginning of the movie and 45/46 when she has the baby (since we don't know where her birthday falls in all of this). They state that Matty is 12 in the second film, although I don't remember if they ever say his age in the first but I'm guessing he's either 11 or 12 in the first.

It's not that uncommon for a huge age gap. My younger sister is 4 years younger, the next one is 12 years younger than me. When I was in high school, I remember watching Boy Meets World and when he was in college, his mother had a baby, always a ratings booster. I thought that was soooo weird. But just afte my freshman year of college, we had a surprise baby. So I have a sibling 19 years younger than I am. The only time it's weird is when people think she's mine.

My husband, an obvious surprise, was 18 years younger than his next sibling. My MIL was 45 when she had him. Life is often very unpredictable. (My MIL, a pistol, often said about those two, who were constantly arguing as adults, that she, "had them too close together!"

My oldest brother was 13 when I was born my other brother was 11 and my sister was 8. My parents got married young and my mom had my oldest brother when she was 21 and two years after my sister was born my parents starting trying for another baby but my mom had a trouble getting pregnant and she got pregnant a few years later than she wanted to. I know a lot of people who have big gaps with their kids. In the second movie Annie is 26 and Matt was 12 so there was already a big gap between them and there is gap between Matt and Megan.
