So that's why George wasn't in the room. Plus, like someone said earlier, he probably wanted to be there for Annie and Nina and to make sure everything was okay with both.

In a planned C-section non-medical staff (like the father or other 'birth-partner') are allowed to be present - and are welcome - to support and share the moment with the mother, who is usually awake with a spinal block anaesthetic. In an emergency c-section (like Nina's) time is of the essence. There is no time for a spinal block so the mother is unconscious under general anaesthetic, and the medical team are working at a more pressing pace. It is not usual practice for partners to be allowed in theatre in those circumstances, because in an emergency no-one needs the distraction of an anxious, untrained observer underfoot.

I always thought it was because George was from a different generation where it wasn't as common for the man to be in the delivery room, but I never thought about the C-section thing.
