El Gallo

As a British girl, I hadn't seen the original Broadway musical before I saw the movie. As a result, I loved it!! I only saw the good things in the movie - especially El Gallo!! Loved his style and flair, and his soft gentle singing voice, very sexy, as was the hot body!!! :-)

Did anyone else think Jonathon Morris was Fantastick in this role? x

reply

No. I've never seen a Broadway production either, and though it's supposed to be a masterpiece (the movie completely unfaithful to it), I don't want anything more to do with "Fantasticks." Everything that was supposed to be disturbing (including references to rape) were handled with such idiocy that it was insulting as if they were trying to get laughs. There's no sense in the film. The songs are performed with absolutely no conviction from any of the actors (it pains me to have to say that about Joel Grey). The choreography looks like something out of a junior high show choir. Everything of this movie was completely amature and pointless, including (and especially) El Gallo. "Style, falir, sexy, hot body" must have distracted from seeing reality. Were you wearing the same mask Luisa was? Maybe I should find one too; then it will look like a good movie!

Without a doubt, a very fine-looking gent with a lovely voice, physical agility adn strength, and amusing sarcastic tone at times. I love the film and every scene he is in, including the deleted ones. For me, he makes the film, though I liked the entire cast. I can't think of too many other actors who could have done so much with the role and the multiple personas it required. His eyes are amazing and hypnotic. And, yes, that fencing scene...hot is all I can say about that.

Jerry Orbach originated the role - about as far from this movie guy as possible.

I with they had done it with someone like Kevin Kline.

Kevin Kline is fantastic, but he doesn't have the kind of style that El Gallo needs. Kline is too refined, too genteel. El Gallo is a flambuoyant villain.

Jonathan Morris as El Gallo was, in my opinion, made for the part. He brought something to the table that other actors haven't done before. He brought an infinite amount of depth to a character that has little backstory.

But most importantly, he was GOOD. For this movie, that's enough to be a redeeming quality.

Yes! Morris made the movie imo. The final scene of the caravan leaving with him singing TTR is charismatic and memorable. Still gives me a goose bump or two!!
