What was cut from the Original Version

For those who dont really know what was cut, here is the list of what was cut.

The intial running time was cut down from 110 minutes to 86 minutes. Major changes that were eliminated was the opening song, "Try To Remember", and now you hear it only at the end, althought it's in an extended version from the original reprise. It now starts the movie with El Gallo setting up the carnival.
El Gallo is no longer the narrator. All scenes were cut that had him looking straight into the camera, as well as all narration except for a short poem at the end.
The movie focused on the love story between Matt and Luisa.
We dont meet El Gallo until the fathers do. Luisa does not get a ticket from him or listen to him telling her to take a risks. She just shows up at the carnival and walks right into the Romeo and Juliet movie.
Eliminating all of the backstage duscussion among the actors after Matt saves the day and battles El Gallo. It then cuts directly to the happy families dancing in the lane in front of their houses.
Elimination of "The Vegetable Song" sung by the two fathers. They used to sing it after the kids found out they paid for the hoax of a kidnapping and had left to confront El Gallo.
Now it stays with the kids and goes directly to the confrontation.
Eliminated the character of the cop.
Eliminated the speech about various types of literary rapes.
Many of the songs were cut by a verse.
Made whatever trims they could in the dialogue scenes to keep it moving.

And that folks, what was cut from the Original version.

They recently showed this film on Israeli TV, and apparently managed to obtain the original version, since all of the things that you say were cut from the original version were shown.

@ Balok-2

THANK YOU!!! This has been driving me crazy, because a few years ago, I saw the movie on Canadian TV (I think on Bravo) that begins with El Gallo singing Try To Remember while riding on his wagon. Yet, as I understand it, this is not the version I would receive if I purchased the DVD.

Glad to see I am not alone in remembering the good version of this movie. It needs to be on DVD now!

The DVD release has the removed scenes and the shortened scenes in full -- but only as supplements.

It looks like it was a pretty decent version of the play before they cut it with a blunt axe. Shameful. Why they couldn't have restored it instead of presenting it in pieces I don't know.

I might do it myself at home some day via editing.

reply

Hi.... I actually played Luisa in the musical a few months ago. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get the DVD. I'm kind of interesting in watching it, just to see the contrast in characters. Thanks.

reply

I actually paid $20 for a DVD a year or two ago, but my local "club" is selling it at $9.99. Shouldn't be too difficult to find,

I'd wager that your version was better than Coppola's pointless cut. Perhaps you should hold out for a decent release of the longer film.

<< Many of the songs were cut by a verse. >>

Arrgggh! When the 1965 film *Camelot* reached the neighborhood screens, some overpaid self-designated genius shortened it to acceptable run time by clipping anything repititous in a song, like the "refrain" or whatever this guy called it. What do the simple folk do?, well, who cares? The ghosts of Lerner and Loewe (never mind they were still alive) should have attacked the bounder.

That's what F. F. Crappola did here, just snip a verse here and there, nobody'll miss it. From "Try to Remember," for Gods' sake! Infamnia.

Wow. That's interesting. Thank you for your replys.

Um, and the biggest part that was cut from the movie WAS THE MUTE!!!!!!!

The mute was absolutely the best part of the show, but since they made it into a movie they could just "get rid of" the mute and use the actual objects. A tragedy in my eyes. The MUTE brought the show together. The movie, blegh.

And every scene with Teller too! He was Mortimer, the actor who dies.

It's a shame really. I was lucky enough to go to a screening in 94 or 95 of the whole thing and it was a charmer.

reply

I actually played Mortimer in my high school production of the show, and in our show, we had to cut "An Episode," the rhythmic chant between Henry and Mortimer, which left me upset because I didn't sing a lot. Still, Mortimer is easily my favorite role that I've played. I actually had to watch "My Fair Lady" to get the Cockney accent down.

"He's not really an Indian, you know." Great stuff.

THE DOVE OF AMERICA

Mr. Cellophane shoulda been my name, Mr. Cellophane....

It murders the play.

reply

Same. Played "Mortimer..." Twice. Now I reckon I'm regulated to one of the "Dad" roles. Bring it on. (It's good to be old.)

in the stage play the song" plant a radish" was sung after the "epasode" were the old actor and the man who dies dressed as pirates caries matt off stage and the narator says
" now grant in your minds a month
October is over and the sky grows gray
a month goes by
It's a little colder
a month goes by
we're one month older"
the farthers meet in there gardens as the muts is rebilding the "wall"
the fathers then reconcile and sing "plant a radish"

if you have a good pentium class computer do what i did
rip the dvd
splice in all the cut parts in the correct places "as in the stage play"
burn it back to a duble layer dvd and you will have a gem then will be very watchable

warning
on a P4 3.00 Mhz.HT computer with i gig memory and a 256 Meg video card it will take about 12 hours to rip correctly
8 or 9 hours to edit and splice the parts in
and another 6-7 hours to render the video back to dvd

THATS WHAT IT TOOK ME.

even though its nof perfect some color shifting and one part where i mised cut a seen and it jumps back about a second if you can prove that you own a copy
of the dvd for a small charge i will send you a copy of my re edit for a small charge to cover my costs. it. bet my contact information from my web site www.nbicomputers.com

Having been a Fantasticks fan since 1964 and having seen multiple productions of it over the years, including one in which my own daughter played Louisa, I actually loved the movie. I knew it couldn't be like the play, but I thought it was just beautiful and magical in its own way. But I saw your information about a re-do of the DVD, and I'd be very interested in that, but your website didn't work. I've owned the DVD for years and given it as gifts. At any rate, if you have any way of my getting in touch with you about a restored version with all the cuts put back, I would be very grateful. Plant a Radish is one of my favorite songs, and it was a shame it was left out of the DVD version. Of course, you wrote this seven years ago, and I'm probably out of luck, but I thought I'd try anyway. Thanks!

Darn, I guess it's time to get a Blu-Ray player then. I've been avoiding it since I ended up getting an HD DVD player just before they stopped making them. But this is great news, hickyman. Thank you so much! I did look at that site and did a search for The Fantasticks on it, but they don't have it yet. I'll keep an eye out, however, and look around for other old favorites they might have on there.
