Captain re-entering the cockpit

So why did captain do something so stupid and re-enter the cockpit of the plane when it was full of smoke? What the hell was he trying to do? It just didnt make sense. Nor did it make sense that every single passenger was standing so close to the plane when it was smoking. Wouldnt you get as far away as possible??? Dumb.
