If you could pick 3 to 4 movies that defined the 90s

Which ones would you pick? They don't have to be deep and meaningful or depressing. They can be campy, awkward etc.

It just needs to have showcased the music of that decade, the fashion, the attitudes, ect.

reply

A lot of good films to pick from. But my top 3 essential 90s would probably be:

3. Clerks.
2. Kids
1. Tromeo & Juliet

Empire Records would be up there though.

reply

Good choices.

I'd go for:
Clerks
King of New York
Naked

'What does it matter what you say about people?'
Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958).

reply

Kids? Really? I guarantee you the majority of people have never seen kids let alone heard of it.

reply

If you were a teenager in the 90s, you very likely heard of kids.

reply

Sorry, this is more than three or four... some of these are worth thinking about, IMHO. These are mostly (not always) about people in their 20's, trying to find their way, so, in some ways that is what "defined the 90s," for people who were at an age to think like that. Of course, the 90's were different for different people, but these all had something to say.

Kicking and Screaming (1995)
Reality Bites
Bodies, Rest, and Motion
Freak Talks About Sex (AKA Blowin' Smoke)
Beautiful Girls
Mallrats
Bye Bye Love
Scream

Your suffering will be legendary, even in Hell.

Rushmore is amazing.

Pump Up The Volume
Empire Records
Clueless

reply

I know that technically Pump up the Volume was released in 1990 but I always think of it as a late 80s movie (when it was filmed). It reminds me more of the late 80s then it does the 90s.

reply

That’s because 1990 was the LAST year of the 80s decade. Sheesh! Why is this so hard for people to grasp?! Our calendar began with the year 1, not the year 0. A decade STARTS with a “1” and ENDS with a “0.” Don’t tell me that’s illogical. You’re just not using the right logic.

reply

its still arbitrary which decade you want to call it .
Its a language thing not mathematical - much like all that generation xyz crap.

also , is a 20 year old in their "20s" or not?

Clueless
Wayne's World
The Matrix/T2
The Boondock Saints/True Romance
Pointe Break/Speed
Trainspotting/Pulp Fiction

That's 7 but I think these films define the 90s decade very well.

reply

Teen movies from the 90s were all over the map when compared to teen movies from the 80s and 70s.
