Warning - lots of bad DVDs out there!

Firstly, many of the prints of the movie have no English subtitles, which I need.

Many regional versions omit the original Spanish audio and substitute French, Italian, German, etc.

So far I have made the mistake of buying two different new DVDs, one from Spain and another from France. Both were single-layer with horizontal AND vertical bars, presenting a small image which scales quite badly.

I cannot find a dual-layer disc. Or subtitles. I read somewhere online that the two French pressings (Le Jour de la Bete) were the only anamorphic transfers, mine certainly is not. Either this movie was bootlegged to death, or licensed to countless half-assed video companies.

Why is there no fully widescreen version with multiple languages and subtitles on a dual-layer disc? I have never had so much trouble sorting through countless bad versions of an excellent movie!

agreed! anyone know of new releases in the past year or so? basically, this film is impossible to get in the US. Netflix says it's "getting it", but they have been saying that for ages.

I managed to get hold of a pretty decent Korean release on ebay recently.
Has the original Spanish audio as well as Korean and English subtitles. Best thing was the price. A very reasonable five quid more than makes up for the not too great picture quality.

Best buy is probably the collectors edition ("Ediccion Para Coleccionistas") released by Canal+ a few years back, 2006 I think. It's got restored image and audio, so it looks and sounds great, and it's got English, Italian, French and Spanish subs. Unfortunately for people living in the US, it's a region 2 DVD, so you might have to get yourself a region-free player in order to watch it.
Every now and then I see a cpy pop up for sale on eBay.es (that's where I got my copy) at reasonable prices (mine was €10 including the s&h).
It also has a "Making Of" and "Interviews With The Crew" feature, but it isn't subtitled and has poor image and sound quality... too bad! :(

Great movie!

If only there was a place to download that version as a complete untouched DVD. ;)

I have an English-dubbed VHS copy. Normally I hate dubbed versions of foreign films, but this was actually fairly decent.
