Cast is chockful of famous actors (or ones who went on to become famous).
Did it have release problems?

Lewis is the biggest surprise in this. I only really know him from Men in Tights!!!

Bad promotion probably, or perhaps the subject matter was too much for some people. It's an amazing film though.
