Its been a few years since that fateful night that I sat through the steaming pile of cow sh it that is 'The Doom Generation'. But all this time later, I still have never seen, nor will I ever again see, such a horrendously bad film. The fact that my girlfriend and I actually paid money to own this movie is enough to literally make me sick to my stomach. It truly is the worst film ever made.
Well don't beat around the bush, tell us how you really feel. If you're going to bash a film, at least say WHY it's bad. It seems like you never actually watched it.
Hah, I told you how I really feel. The movie is downright awful. And rather than me sit here and list everything bad about the movie, it would be easier for you to tell me whats good about the movie. That list oughta be damn short. The movie fails in every way imaginable.
This movie was an excellent commentary on American society. The dialog was actually quite well written (though it was only occasionally as well executed, granted). The social isolation portrayed in the movie is something that many people (well, at least the ones paying attention to what is going on in this country) have felt at some point or another. There are plenty of good things in this movie, I think that a lot of what people don't like is the fact that they want to go on with life oblivious to the way our society is and they (and by they I do mean YOU) don't like when a movie like this one comes along which scrapes the pretty surface away to reveal the real rotten flesh of it. Yes, it is a B movie, but it is a GOOD B movie and one that makes you think, or at least it should.
Me despising this movie has absolutely nothing to do with me wanting to avoid the darker sides of life or the dregs of humanity, if thats what you are implying. Infact, those are movies I tend to be drawn to. Hence the reason 'Requiem For A Dream' and 'Bully' are my two favorite films of all time. I just find this film absolutely repulsive in every way. A film can be gritty and still be tasteful and have true meaning to it. This film does not accomplish either of the latter.
syphon- they couldn't be one of your favorite films. They are two different films. But I'm just playing, it was funny reading it.
Bully is another Larry Clark film remixed to look different from his others. And Harmony Korine's absurdist twist wasn't on board to lend it some decency. It was alright, but nothing compared to the surreal good vs. evil battle of a pop fantasy that is The Doom Generation. Fresh in every sense of the word, TDG doesn't waste any time with plot or narrative, in fact the whole thing rebels against it, because every time a character "remembers" Amy Blue, she tries to tell them she has no idea who they are, so at the very moment narrative wants to intrude, the three main characters push it away. And it isn't until one of them is killed, by neo nazi homophobes no less, that the film explodes and ends.
The menagerie of characters, luscious colors, the staged-ness of the whole thing. It's just a slap in the face of films, harkening back to the anti establishment of early Godard. The irreverence is biting, the commentary satirical, and the film itself just hilarious. But that's just my two cents. You don't like it, eh, I'm not too big on Requiem or Bully, so to each his own.
It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but I agree this is the worst movie I've personally ever seen. While it looks good visually, sets, cinematography, lighting etc. the dialogue is atrocious, the story is utter nonsense and there is absolutely nothing likeable about any of the characters, who are a collection of every single generation-x stereotype amplified to the nth degree. I'd watch this movie again for chuckles except the end is so disturbing, even that takes the fun out of it. Damn you TDG!
I fail to see how this movie is an "excellent commentary on American society". It seemed to meander from one violent, crude, childish outburst to the next w/o anything holding the plot (was there one?) together.
I looked at the info on my guide and was expecting the word "comedy" to be used but it wasn't. Moments were funny here and there but the "talking head" and others just lost me. I found it hard to believe anyone could actually praise this crap...
Gummo is so bad... Yet... Everytime it comes up in a conversation someone tells me its great... Of course, I am compelled to disagree... At any rate, The Doom Generation isn't that bad. I like the crazy redneck at the fastfood place and the barfing head of the dude from 21 Jumpstreet. And also that clever rhyme about *beep* that the neoNazis say near the end of the film.
"Every nation, big or small, has its strong and weak points."
No that's got to belong to Larry Clark's "Teenage Caveman". LC really reveals what a sleaze he is with that one, just not even attempting to have a higher purpose other than showing teenagers having sex and doing drugs. I don't know, maybe his purpose was to discourage kids from having sex and doing drugs by making it look so nauseatingly boring.
I'm sorry. I don't see how anyone could be dumb enough to confuse "Doom Generation" with "Freddy Got Fingered", which is clearly the worst film of all time. That is all.
Teenage Caveman is terrible. My god...what a lump of crap. Has anyone here seen Harmony Korine's "Julian Donkey Boy?" It actually is a big step up from "Gummo," and features Wernor Kertzov (I think that's how you spell his name).
i really enjoyed JDB. i'm a big fan of ewan bremner, but chloe sevigny just works my last nerve. if i can truly enjoy a film that features her, it must be a good one indeed.
what??? Gummo is excellent...! It taught me to really dislike USA, cause that's the kind of people walking around there... Gummo is a future cult classic!
I can understand not liking TDG if you don't know what you're getting into. It's certainly not for everyone, and sometimes I don't know whether or not I'd love it so much if I hadn't seen it when I was 15.
I always felt like I should like Gregg Araki's work, but I just can't. I thought The Doom Generation was awful as well as Mysterious Skin... something about his style that I just can't get into.
Doom Generation stands as the worst film I have ever seen. I judge all other bad movies by this benchmark. I love exploitation and grindhouse stuff so usually violence and nudity can redeem an especially bad movie (not the case here).
i'm also a big fan of the movie bully, bt why would you really compare it to the doom generation.
Because they are both completely over-the-top, and filled with gratuitous sex and violence. I personally loved Bully and hated The Doom Generation-- deeply. Gregg Araki really sucks. I can't believe no one has mentioned Splendor... what a pile of crap!
sure it's stupid, it's cheesy, it's pointless, whatever. i'd agree on just about every bad adjective you want to slap on it (except for the ending, that is).
I'd say this is the second worst movie of all time. The plot is excuciating to behold. And it's execution is even worse. I'd rather spoon my eyes out and jam pencil points through my eardrums than watch this again.
As for the worst movie ever, that'd have to be happiness. At least this movie doesn't glorify pedophilia.
how in the blue hell, could this be the wrost movie ever???? the starter of this board must be the kind of person who likes cra-p like, (Gulp) DATE MOVIE or even,(shudders) PULSE.
I remember renting this several years ago after reading about Araki and this movie in filmmaker.
After watching it, the only thing I remembered was -
A.) Rose mcGowan's breasts seemed bigger then I was expecting.
2.) ALL the performances , the acting was noticably bad , real amateurish and forced looking.
Ultimately, I couldnt believe that Araki was supposed to actually be considered (I guess by some (at least at filmmaker magazine) as somehow a "good" or even a somewhat decent filmmaker. How somebody like that could gain admission to the prestigious USC Film School in the first place , let alone make such a poor movie was just so truly baffling to me.
The Doom Generation is one of my favourite films, I never get tired of watching it - but I can see why certain people wouldn't like it. As for Requiem For A Dream, my best friend is absolutely in love with that movie and since him and I have a very similar taste I thought I'd enjoy it, but I actually hated the hell out of it. It was a brilliant film no doubt, and it had a good plotline and whatnot I just overall, really didn't like it. Anyways, a bit off topic but does anyone know if Rose McGowan wore a wig in TDG?
So many people comparing bully to this. I find that hilarious. Bully was based on a true story. The "over the top" argument does not work when comparing Bully to other films.
i love "the doom generation" but it's not for everyone. i always thought it was brilliant because it was so messed up and dark, but also very funny in some scenes. like Parker Posey's "kitten" scene--its only in the last 20 minutes or so that things get very depressing and it becomes harder to watch for me. but i think you have to have a huge appreciation for weird, outrageous movies to truly enjoy this.
