The IMDB rating (and metascore)

Sorry, but i just wished to say this. The rating of this movie shows that there's something seriously wrong with this world. This movie is all about love and passion, the story is cute and compelling, the acting was flawless and the atmosphere was ridiculously romantic.
I'm a big movie lover, and my favourites are the giants like Godfather Trilogy, Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction, ecc (I could go on...), but I see no reason in not giving this movie a 9. This has probably been the most passionate 90 minutes I have seen in a movie. It does not force itself to be romantic and erotic. It simply is. It's a sincere, true, philosophical tale about the true meaning of love. It's just so sweet. Now, I am NOT going to compare it to other romantic movies, beacause I don't like comparing movies (and I think that comparing is just stupid). IN GENERAL.
The rating distrubs me and makes me wonder what did critics and casual reviewers not like about this movie. What's not to like about love? And what's not to like about a cute and sweet tale about a man who wanted heaven on earth?
I leave the answers to you.

Well, I think the rating is pretty goood. It is a sweet idea and a sweet film, but IMO ist not worh more than a 7. Something is lacking for it to be a truly great film.

It is honest, sincere and very romantic, and in a time where most movies are factory made this is a true gem.
But as a movie its just not a masterpiece.

reply

I loved every minute of it and thought of it as a compelling romantic fantasy cleverly performed on the screen.

I hear you mate.

It's funny how I love some movies rated 5, and dislike some movies rated 8.

reply

Its not funny, just normal. I totally hate all the Godfather movies, for instance, but they keep getting rated as among the best anyway, and some that I think are the best are not even rated, or at least not very highly rated.

There are worse things wrong with this world than a movie you like not being critically acclaimed!
Its just not a "great" movie. That doesn't mean its not enjoyable or that some people will think its great, but thats more to do with personal preference and not how well its made. Its got the "feel good" factor and a romantic nature that will appeal to some people but not to others.

Movies like Godfather etc are considered great because overall they are well crafted in terms of plotting, script, pacing, cinematography, story, acting, etc etc. I hate the Lord of the Rings movies, but I can still appreciate how they are considered masterpiece because they are technically well-crafted and well deserved the Oscars they won. I also loved Don Juan even though its not a great movie overall. I can totally understand how its not considered great if sweet and romantic are not your thing.

Every true literary fanatic of Tolkien will somewhat dislike the trilogy, because it's so Hollywood-esque.

Hi I just watched the movie, liked it and gave a 7. I agree the acting was fab but there seemed a glaring fail in acting from the husband of his tutor. The scene where he arrives home and tried to kill him, he seemed a very poor actor. I can't imagine how someone could cast him and yet fail to see this, the only thing that occurs to me is those scenes are purposely made to look a it contrived as they are to make us wonder if they are just from a story book? But it was only the husband that seemed rubbish.

I gave it a 7 as well.

It's a bagatelle, but a nice little bagatelle. It definitely makes me feel good every time I watch it.
And it's romantic and sensual without being over the top or to cheesy. It manges to keep on the right side.
And Johnny Depp was so good in it. I think it's one of his best and most under appreciated roles.

Overall, a very enjoyable film!

Having mental illness in my family, I was worried that Don Juan would hurt someone. So I could not suspend my disbelief about the premise of the movie. Where is the love if it is imagined? How is it real? The only part of the movie that felt real was he dialog about how he needed love and chose a most dangerous way to ask for help. I give it a 6.

I gave it a 9. Its excellent. I hear a bunch about how good Depp is in it and he certainly is. I must say though, Marlon is simply amazing! I think some people grade movies and assume that just because the film only touched upon some truths in its message that it left out other truths, or has only so much understanding to give. Not that the film just possibly did not go into detail every subject or truth in existence. It is certainly very romanticized and I do not have a problem with it. Movies are great If they are larger than life or take you to a beautiful place. The world can be drab and movies can remedy that in a imaginative way. I kind of feel that that is partly what movies are for.

I completely agree with you on this one. There are so many beautiful messages that were conveyed with a great touch by the direction and performances. Great post. Rating this under an 8 makes no sense whatsoever to me. a six is criminal! lol Then you get into comparing it with movies that are generally made nowadays!? Get outta town! THis movie should at least be a 9
