When I stumbled upon this on TV many years ago ...
... we expected it to be crap. Johnny Depp was a name that meant nothing to us back then (even though we had watched and absolutely loved Ed Wood. But we didn't recognize him - neither by name nor in the movie). And a movie about Don Juan didn't even promise much swashbuckling. And from the 90th not even an old movie.... Oh we were worried :D. But it was the only thing even remotely interesting on TV so we gave it a try.
At first it looked quite nice. Then he walked onto the street and it was modern day. We were like "Oh no please! Not a Don Juan in modern day crap. This is even worse than a bad period movie.". Well then he went into the restaurant and I'm not sure when we started to laugh and say "This is genius." but the latest moment the movie got to us would be "Well. Now I have to die."
This movie gave us fits of laughter without end and it was thoughtprovoking nonetheless. We absolutely loved it (OK it has it's weaknesses but it's so much fun.). I believe the movie ended up to be the first movie I ever looked for on Amazon and bought on DVD - and that was years after I had watched it on TV.
