unbelievable romance... no really, it's not believable

Is it just me or did anyone else not really follow how Simran
suddenly realizes she is swooning over Raj? He acts like an
arrogant and immature fool for a good part of their "courtship".
When he suddenly arrives in India to save Simran from a
marriage to a different arrogant fool, he asks her if she trusts
him (at least in the Hindi to English subtitle translation
he does) and she replies that yes, she trusts him with her life.
Hmmmm. Either she's a slow learner or totally smitten to the
point of stupidity, or this is really bad writing, or hey,
all of the above. Because up till this point, Raj has given
her plenty of opportunities to see why she really SHOULDN'T
trust him, such as when he convinced her that they slept together
while she was drunk, or when he told her he was in love with
her and then laughed in her face. Yeah, super romantic.
Maybe it's a cultural difference or bad translation. Maybe it's
that same old theme of chicks falling for the wrong dude...

Its Just you - They spent a month together. I'm sure many people felt like this after a few days with a person. Too bad you never had that type of experience, I feel bad for you.

There is no "one point" where she falls in love with him. It was a gradual thing:

- when they were sitting in bed, and she was hugging him, you could tell she felt physical attraction for his body
- again, when she was getting on a train, and she looked back, you could tell she felt an emotional bonding
- by the time they got home to London, she was *already* in love
- just that, like most of us, she didn't realize it

I've been through that. You meet a person. You become good friends. And then one day you just suddenly realize, "I've been thinking about this person all day..." Love, real love, is gradual and slowly builds up.

The same was true with the girl in this movie... it was a gradual thing.

Hi! Please everyone don’t get me wrong. I do like this movie. But….

what I can’t understand is how Simran does not realize she loves Raj, then they say goodbye and all of the sudden it hits her!?!.. I mean, come on. Believe me it’s easy to know whether or not you have feelings for someone! Ok, it’s not impossible for Simran to fall for Raj. They spend an amount of time together. And also a great amount alone. They were able to have plenty of conversations. They were together for like 24 hours! Of course you’re going to talk and get to know each other. Especially when you’re alone with someone else and not in a large group. At least he’s better then that other arrogant guy, because he
A. truly loves Simran for who she is (remember the scene when he prayed in church for Simran? And when he was starving himself for Simran?)
B. is not just interested in just playing bedroom games

Yes I agree that Raj can be stupid and irritating, perhaps they overdid it a little bit in the movie. But he apologized about joking around about sleeping together. He never used her or anything. About the laughing in her face: I can completely understand that part.

He tells her that he loves her (he means it). She stares at him. He says it again. And again she stares at him. And stares at him. And stares at him.

I MEAN COME ON!!! I’m going to be honest with you if I would tell a guy I loved him and he would just stare at me for hours without saying anything back. I would most likely also laugh and pretend I was joking when I said it. Most people are nervous when they tell the truth about their feelings. Having a positive reaction can help the situation and how you feel at that moment. If you don’t have any reaction except the constant staring I would pull back and pretend I didn’t feel anything for the person just to save myself from getting hurt.

That was why Raj was laughing and claimed he made a joke in the first place. He wasn’t laughing in her face. He was laughing because he became insecure thanks to her staring and complete silence. He covered it up by saying he was joking about his feelings for her and how he could not believe she fell for it. A lot of that regular blah/blah Raj uses to get out of strange situations i guess lol.

reply

That was a good point about Raj. As for Simran, you have to remember that she's arranged to marry someone else and that was a serious thing to her. She may have been worrying about that and trying to get the most out of her trip to europe, rather than the fee;ings she had. But once she was returning home, her two worlds were colliding, suddenly she had Raj in her life but also a fiance. It probably just didn't occur to her.

reply

I think maybe she did have feelings for him, but was unsure that he had feelings for her, until she asked if he was coming to her wedding and he said no. Having spent a month together, they probabaly would have become friends, so it would seem that there would be no other reason for him not to attend her wedding, other tha he was in love with him.

Also, the song after shows that everywhere they go they see eachother. Sometimes you realise you like people once your not with them all the time anymore.

But Simran didn't know the real reason that Raj laughed. She just thought he made a joke and made fun of her reaction. So yeah I agree with the OP that it's not believable to fall head over heels in love with a person who makes fun of you.

Raj Malhotra seems an arrogant and immature; when he told to Simran he was in love with her and then laughed in her face. also when he gave a funny red flower with water to simran and raj and his friends laghing to Simran. he has showed so funny to simran and seem simran is for raj a fun and a game. after these irritations suddenly Simran loved Raj! How come was she in love him??? it's not believable. just after she was drunk. yes, agree she really shouldn't trust raj. Simran fiance can't understand simran dont like him!!such as we dont see a scence in this film that Simran and her fiance are talking. maybe he doesnt need it. because this is a traditional marriage. The only good thing about this film were its songs, which were surprisingly melodious Seem this story has problem and bad writing! kajol and shahrukh's another films: Baazigar, Karan Arjun, KKHH, K3G are sooo better than this film.

reply

k3g is better than this film, the rest you put up are pretty crappy- baazigar, karan arjun, kkhh, i mean come on, those movies suck. this movie was overrated but it is still fun to watch with the family. it covered an important issue in indian societies today that are kids allowed to choose who they should marry to, or let their parents decide. shah rukh's antics were tolerable, and kajol looked the best she ever has.

reply

I just saw this film. Before it I had only seen one other Bollywood Film (if you count Monsoon Wedding as "Bollywood"). I liked it but it was a little long- they could have edited it more. I'm definitely gonna check out some of the Bollywood films people on this forum ranked higher than DDLJ.

hey sara,

if you like the mainstream stuff, i'd tell you to check out dil chahta hai, kabhi kushi kabhi ghum, and hum tum. even though they may have some issues, these movies are very entertaining

reply

Most Bollywood films are long up to 3 hours maybe more.

reply

Don’t get me wrong. This movie was not as bad as some hindi movies. fantastic song/dance, great Amrish puri and kajol acting and funny shahrukh's playing piano!!
yes, this movie covered an important issue in traditional values indian societies today, let to choose to marry. but it seems line story has problem and bad writing about Slow love of Simran to Raj that she didnt realize it.

reply

why did she fall in love with him? it's obvious - he's shahrukh
the riddle would be unsolvable if she'd not fall in love with him

and seriously - i say the day-after-indian-pride conversation plus his general charm (that is he's being regular srk:D)

reply

Gosh, he came all the way from London, why shouldnt he trust her?

reply

Err.... did you not see the scene with Simran and her mother after she got back from europe?
Durrr.... she explained then and there, that she'd fallen for Raj, but she hadn't realised until he was walking away from her, and that she'd realised she might never see him again, see? so simple... (sigh)

Just watched DDLJ for the first time, i hope there are more bollywood films of this standard out there, i loved it! but then i'm just and old romantic!

I have SUR and Lagaan up next to watch, they were recommended by a friend, and i owe her a huge debt, DDLJ was probably the best Bollywood film i have seen, i do hope she hasn't spoilt me!
