Most overrated film in bollywood history

What made this movie sooo good???? I have to admit, the songs were nice, but this was the most unoriginal plot ever concieved. Can someone pleeze tell me why they like it so much?

reply

Character study, strong script and good music you see ! Common Sense

reply

I think more simplified they thought srk and kajol had good chemistry, and wedding movies typically make people feel festive.

reply

Please do not insult the greatest movie of all time, please!

This movie is basically the Titanic of India. It's a big romance epic & people go to the theater to see it again & again, because they love to see people fall in love. The End. If you were expecting Shakespeare, then don't bother watching it.

However, despite its "been there/done that" plot, this movie is FUN. Yes we've seen it all before in literally hundreds of romance movies, but this movie has good jokes, good music, and a nice romance to take your girlfriend. That's why people keep coming back.

If you mean epic because of the length, mutliple story etc. then that goes for many Bollywood films. That's why I love them. Sometimes I think American films are way too short.

reply

And if you removed the songs (which would be a major detraction) then the movies would be the same length as Hollywood's. So the question is: do you want musical numbers? For me, Bollywood means musicals. Others have complained about the music.

since when hindi movies have original plot. even the classics are either copy or inspired. DDLJ is w/o any doubt one most enjoyable movie of all time. great music, lush locale, performances all made it so much enjoyable. mnoreover it was devoid of vulgarity. all in all a great movie for ur leisure.

reply

in 1995 this was like one of the best movie made since ever but now opinions have changes since its been 10 years since this has been made

reply

but still a great movie! SRK and Kajol one of the cutest couples ever! a love story w/o unneccessary... vulgarity as has been stated previously

reply

Please mate, dont fool yourself out there. How could you not appreciate DDLJ. Either you are not a fan of the casts or you only Like films from your favourite actor/actress. DDLJ was so simple that everybody liked it, except you. And you are not a kind suppoter of Good Films. DDLJ is and will forever remain one or the most appreciated film in Film History, even in USA or UK....
The Casts were Up to there Best Perfomance,,, The Music was Magically Great,,, The History was So simple that you will want to watch the whole movie again.
As for me,, my favourite film remains 1998 Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,,.

Tribute To Our Late Nana,, AMRISH PURI

reply

you got to be kidding!!!! ddlj the most overrated movie??? it's one of the greatest motion pictures ever made. the movie is really two movies in one. the first half is completely different from the second half. on one hand you get to see london and some of the best views of europe while in the second half you get a complete conrasting punjab. the music is awesome.
it's very easy to criticise but it's not that difficult to appreciete good work.

reply

hey kuch kuch hota hai is also one of my fav films in the romantic category, others include DDLJ, Kaho naa.., mere yaar ki shaddi

anyways, DDLJ is a classic hindi film, songs acting, comedy , everything is present, and no it is not overrated, veer zaara might be overrated but not this one, a true blue classic

reply

An escapist cinema with very good music. Nothing classy about it. A typical decent bollywood pop-corn flick.
Someone was talking about "character study" Oh, come on! How can you expect proper characterization in this kind of movie. The character were merely one-dimensional(if at all they had any).
Unfortunately, this movie started the horrible trend of 'Johar/Chopra' kind of movies which are ruining the Hindi film industry.

Bali-wood is learning the same lesson Hollywood learned:

- Aim for the lowest IQ, to reap the largest audience & biggest profit

Intellectually stimulating movies may make great art, but they go right over the heads of the working man... and as a result, earn little money.

If one finds Dilwale Dulhania Le jayenge as the most over rated film in Bollywood, I am afraid we have lost the art of smiling. I am sure this larger than life film is not meant for the fan who has started this thread. He or She may enjoy a genre of movies that show misery, poverty, losses, sorrow, depression, etc.

reply

Quite right. If you wish to see horror, tragedy, drama just look around you!!! There's plenty to go around. However, if you wish to have your heart (and that of your significant other) warmed to a nice glow, then go enjoy this movie. It is a timeless classic and I hope we never lose sight of that.

[deleted]

well if that's the case, i guess all those Indian doctors, engineers, lawyers, college students, etc... who got their degrees from top universities in America, England, and India must be pretty *beep* stupid. either that or you must have a pretty low opinion of Indian people in general. Maybe b/c we're still outscoring you in IQ tests, college admission programs, and professional jobs. And Troy, it's Bollywood, not "Bali-wood." I would think somebody of your apparent "caliber" would at least be smart enough to google the correct spelling.

I don't care if it's a pop-corn flick or a deep art house film. You are still going to have character study, arc etc.

reply

Just have to say, DDLJ is a classic.

Remember, it came out 10 years ago, back then this was an original and fanstastic peice of cinema. It was magic. Since then Bollywood has changed (a LOT), and anyone who is new to Bollywood will never understand it's significance. It's like 'Sholay' a classic to those who know it. To those who don't, will never love the way others do.

reply

its just an average flick
just a timepass movie
great movie?????... u must be kidding
yes it is overrated...no doubt...if not most overrated

reply

[deleted]

U must be drunk...just a timepass muvy cant run for 10 years..its the best muvy evermade...a classic is classic..it cant be changed just for few people...and how much people liked it has just become history..its a timeless classic...all the muvys made after it Dil To pagal hai, kuch kuch hota hai borrowed inspiration from this classic

I personally think that this movie was quite good for the time it came out in. Therefore, I don't believe it is overrated. It is simplicity that appealed to the Indian and NRI audience alike. Songs being nice were just an added benefit.

The Plot:

It was a different plot in the sense of claiming Europe to be Europe and the second half was shot in India. This plot has been copied several times by movies with Salman Khan in it and hasn't been successful.

The Chemistry:

SRK and Kajol did a very great job in this movie. SRK is a good actor but tends to overact in a lot of other movies like KKHH where all he did was overact (to date, in my opinion, his best performances are in SWADES, DIL SE and KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA)

The Family Angle:

Amrish Puri played the perfect father's character. Farida Jalal also did an amazing job by playing the wife who supressed her dreams and the loving mother. Anupam Kher was perfect as the funny and emotional father. Several other characters like Parmeet Sethi and Satish Shah did a great job as well (compared to the latter's average performance in so many flicks).

The First Attempt:

This was Aditya Chopra's first job and boy, did he do a good job. I think he never managed to create more magic than this movie. I watched his MOHABATTEIN and then K3G by Karan Johar. Nothing comes close to this.

The Songs:

A haunting Lata Ji and Udit along with Asha Ji gave life to the amazing soundtrack of this movie. Playful songs like : Ruk Jaa Dil Deewane.., Romantic Songs like: Tujhe Dekha To.. Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko to Pyaar Sajna.. and Sentimental songs like: Ghar aaja pardesi ... gave the movie the musical touch that made it a hit instantly. I still remembering purchasing my tape first in 1995, followed by the audio CD, VCD and finally DVD :-)

I think it was and will be SRK and Kajol's best pairing to date and the movie made an impact by keeping the heroine's clothes intact (except the 'Mere Khwabon me jo aaye' song), providing amazingly shot songs, beautiful comic timing (consider the sequences in Paris, in the Horse shed and the encounters with future father-in-law), emphasizing on return to motherland and family values (and their importance) and last but not the last, the romance. I don't know about the others but it will go down as one of my favorite movies :-)

I saw this film a few days ago, I liked it, though I liked Pardes a lot too, but when I compare them, Dilwale seems to be the better of the two, only I enjoyed watching pardes more, the two movies have many plot parallels, and a couple of the same actors. (notably SRK)

I liked the first half of Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham more than the first half of DDLJ, but enjoyed the second half of DDLJ more than K3G. I'm not sure which I liked more over all, probalby DDLJ since K3G's second half got annoying, and went into teary eyed mode for so many of the final scenes, not that I don't like that, but it seemed like too much.

reply

this is by FAR, one of THE BEST if not the best movies ever made!! if you challenge its authority just go to a local theater somewhere in India...I'm sure this movie will STILL be there!! doesn't that prove something? as far as I'm concerned, it sure does!!

reply

This is the best movie in the world the songs the characters were all great ( and i dont even speak Hindi)it made me watch this movie more than 20 times..Cheers.

reply

movie was good but definately not great. and i am telling you there are great movies being created in bollywood.

reply

There is one scene in the movie when simran and raj are saying goodbye at the train station in london, and the song najane mere dil ko kya starts playing, and simran starts walking away, and for a few seconds she looks back longingly for some sort of answer, the look on her face is priceless, thats when you realise that youve forgotten these are actors and are completely submerged into the movies characters. This sort of thing is what great movies are made out off.

reply

This movie is a CKASSIC pure and simple its still runing in cinemas ever since 1995 and always has a full house on the weekends. It has everything that you could ever want Love, Humour, Suspence and Great songs!!!. Srk & Kajol share a great on-screen chemistry and are known as the best jodi ever!!. Aditya Chopra direction with this movie was superb and to have your first movie ever be known as a classic is an accomplishment in itself. Honestly I don't think you can question this movie it has everything.

All I can say is "Come...Fall In Love"

reply

actually ur right
it is a common plot but the reason y i and everyone else love it soo much is first the cast the great and so is the music
but the way the movie was made like the way raj and simran met how they initially hated eachother, and the situations that they went through together
in europe were so brilliantly thought out
its the same story as every other movie but this time it was done right
i have yet to see a movie with this story that has even come close to this

the most over rated movie in the world, its utter crap

reply

most overrated, utter crap is reserved for movies like Dhoom or even Dhoom 2.

reply

ohh...really srani.....dhoom and dhoom2 are not crap and theyre not overrated but underrated.....the crap movies are dilwale dulhaniya lejaynga and crap like that

reply

Dhoom ripoff of fast and furious; D 2- copy of hundreds of Hollywood bad action movies - here today gone tomorrow as Dhoom was. DDLJ - still in the hearts and minds of many many viewers... In the all time inflation adjusted biggest grossers since 1942 - DDLJ enjoys 5th place.. D is nowhere on that list and D2 we'll see about in a few years..

reply

[deleted]

[deleted]

"even if it is a ripoff who cares...you enjoy the bloody movie.. "

OK - so go enjoy the next hindi movie ripoff - there are plenty around to amuse the likes of you.

Sorry that DDLJ did not ripoff some silly HW movie and you felt let down by that.. And of course I decide how good an actor or actress is by looking at their faces - that is why when it comes to great actors I pick DiCaprio over Dustin Hoffman, and Jennifer Lopez over Meryl Streep.
